The Ministry of Forestry of Indonesia Launches the 'Timber Legality Information System'

Jakarta, Indonesia, Aug 1, 2012 - (ACN Newswire) - Today, H.E Zulkifli Hasan, Minister for Forestry of the Republic of Indonesia launched the TIMBER LEGALITY INFORMATION SYSTEM (Sistem Informasi Legalitas Kayu/SILK), at Auditorium Manggala Wanabhakti. This event is a joint agenda between related Ministries (Ministry of Industry, Ministry of Trade, Ministry of Finance, Ministry of Cooperative and Small Medium Enterprises) led by the Coordinating Ministry for Economic Affairs.

More than 1,000 of an audience representing various forestry stakeholders who have been involving in developing the Indonesia Timber Legality Assurance System (Indo TLAS) - SVLK (Sistem Verifikasi Legalitas Kayu), including the private sector, Industry Association, Civil Society, attended the launching ceremony.

SILK is a new mechanism for trade in the Indonesian timber product. The system is part of the already established Indonesia Timber Legality Assurance System (Indo TLAS) - SVLK (Sistem Verifikasi Legalitas Kayu), which was developed based on the commitment of Indonesia as one of the producer countries in forest products to assure its legality and sustainability.

Through the SILK electronic system there will be a more efficient and effective mechanism to provide assurance on legality, which increases the competitiveness of the Indonesian forest product in the global market. With support from the consumer countries on rejecting illegal timber and timber product, SILK is part of an effort in promoting sustainable forests, and improving good forest governance.
