St. Bernards UpdateEXPERT Patch Management Solution Certified for HP OpenView Management Software

Announcement posted by XSI Data Solutions 11 Jun 2003

- UpdateEXPERT available to HP OpenView customers as certified Smart Plug-in for deploying hotfixes and service packs reliably and efficiently -
St. Bernard Software, a global provider of security solutions that protect against data loss, system threats and Internet abuse, today announced the availability of St. Bernard UpdateEXPERT Smart Plug-in for HP OpenView, the first patch management solution with certified integration for the HP OpenView Operations for Windows platform.
St. Bernards UpdateEXPERT effectively inventories, deploys, tests and validates the increasing number of Microsoft Windows patches released on a regular basis. St. Bernard has developed the integration as a Solution-level member of the HP OpenView Solution Alliance Program.
UpdateEXPERT is one of the industrys most reliable and flexible patch management tools for keeping servers and workstations up-to-date, said Gary Stowell, vice president of Product Management at St. Bernard Software. The security of the IT infrastructure is dependent on deploying hotfixes and service packs quickly and accurately. St. Bernard UpdateEXPERT Smart Plug-in provides HP OpenView administrators with an extremely efficient way to administer, deploy and report on patch management activities.
The integration developed between UpdateEXPERT and HP OpenView Operations for Windows enables administrators to scan, research, take inventory, deploy and validate security and performance patches for mission-critical Microsoft programs, including Windows NT/2000/XP, Terminal Server, IIS, SQL Server, Exchange, Internet Explorer, Media Player, NetMeeting, NetShow, Office, MDAC and Outlook. Future releases of St. Bernard UpdateEXPERT Smart Plug-in for HP OpenView will support UNIX and LINUX environments.
Patch management is a critical function in the process of securing business infrastructures from malicious attacks, data loss and identify theft, said Todd DeLaughter, vice president and general manager of the HP OpenView Business Unit. St. Bernard Software and its UpdateEXPERT solution allow HP OpenView users to solve the immediate need for patch management on Microsoft operating systems and applications.
The recent outbreak of the Bugbear.B worm clearly demonstrates the need for effective patch management. BugBear.B spread rapidly by taking advantage of a vulnerability in Microsoft Internet Explorer that enabled the worm to be executed by users merely viewing the infected email in Microsoft Outlook. The worldwide proliferation of Bugbear.B could have been greatly reduced had network and security administrators known that a patch for the Internet Explorer vulnerability had been available for almost two years. However, many IT administrators were unaware the patch existed and took no steps to repair the security flaw. On the other hand, administrators who were aware might have resisted deploying a fix because they could not afford the time and effort required to discover what patches were necessary and to research their interdependencies. Patch management and remediation is a complex process that HP OpenView customers can now easily and effectively manage with St. Bernards UpdateEXPERT.
St. Bernard Software will reveal its integrated solution at the HP Software Forum 2003 in Chicago on June 16 - 20, 2003, which showcases HP OpenView offerings for enterprise and communications service provider customers and partners.
