Team Hive Winner of the BlackBerry JamHack 2012 (Melbourne)

Sydney, 26 October 2012 - BlackBerry’s first simultaneous regional hackathon, BlackBerry JamHack 2012, was held this weekend and involved a competitive 40 hour stint amongst teams to build a working application for the BlackBerry 10 platform. Team Hive was the winner on the day with Mike Ebinum, Edward Hooper, Lyn Nagara and Brendan Graetz taking out first prize. The winning team walked away with an all-expense paid trip to BlackBerry Jam Asia in Bangkok, where they will be competing against nine other teams from the region for the title of Asia Pacific champion.

Open to the public, BlackBerry JamHack 2012 in Australia kicked off at the York Butter Factory in Melbourne, on Friday evening (19 October). Support teams and speakers from RIM were present on the day from the company’s headquarters and Singapore to assist developers. The teams were given 40 hours to conceptualise, develop and build a working application for the BlackBerry 10 platform using frameworks such as the BlackBerry 10 Adobe AIR SDK, BlackBerry 10 Native SDK or BlackBerry 10 WebWorks SDK.

“The winning team blew the judges away with their creativity and technical skills”, said Christopher Saunders, Application Development Consultant at RIM Australia. “The team’s app, Hive, is a clever system which allows employees in an organisation to easily access a ridesharing network for taxi trips in order to cut down on costs involved for corporate travel. We hope the team can take out the title for Australia at Blackberry Jam Asia in Bangkok.”

Lyn Nagara, representing team Hive, said, “We enjoyed the BlackBerry JamHack event and were really pleased when we were announced as the competition winners with our Hive app. Our strategy was to develop an app which allowed us to take advantage of BlackBerry 10’s superior security and intuitive user experience. We are looking forward to showcasing Hive during the APAC finals at BlackBerry Jam Asia.”

An honorary mention on the day went to team Pendi for best SAPI integration. Developers from team Pendi, Casey Farrell and Josh Gillies, created the clever Pendi app which saw them win a $500 bonus award donated by Sensis. The app provides business travellers with a one stop shop for accessing location and context aware content when they need it using a variety of publically available APIs.
