Apple Increases Mobile Web Market Share to 5.96% in October

Announcement posted by SmarterApps 24 Dec 2012

Australian app builder and developer, SmarterApps, reveals ultimate “winner” in mobile web traffic war between iOS and Android.
Recently, Chitika released their market statistics for October, their latest release to date. Chitika is an advertising and research firm that monitors their own customers and traffic with world class efficiency. They monitored US and Canadian mobile web traffic over their own network for October. While North America has different statistics than global markets, their status as the largest English-speaking market allows them to have great influence on the global market, and their trends are often mirrored in other English-speaking markets such as Australia.

Apple’s share rose 5.96% for the month, from 59.42% to 65.38%. Chitika attributed the rise to the iPad Mini, iPhone 4, and the shipping of Apple’s 4th generation iPod Touch. Apple had lost 5.61% in September, due to the Nexus 7 and two Galaxy releases, so their 5.96% rise represents the recovery of their losses with a slight overall rise of 0.35%.

Android captured the remainder of the market. Samsung dominated Android manufacturers with a share of 11.86%, almost double their nearest competitor, ZTE, at 5.98%. Blackberry-maker Research in Motion rose 1.29% for the month, from 0.22% to 1.51%. This is significant in that Blackberry might be able to avoid going under, but has no impact on the market as a whole.

The Chitika report goes on to predict that Google will gain a significant share of the market, due to the Nexus 4, 7, and 10, while ZTE and Huawei will continue to grow their market share. RIM is projected to continue to hang on to its meagre market share, but is not predicted to even dent the market otherwise.

According to Craig Aitken, Owner and Director of SmarterApps, the real “winner” of the market share wars is the public: “What we are seeing in the mobile web market right now is two healthy companies slugging it out for dominance. As they compete against each other, the public benefits greatly. They get more and better mobile devices, and are able to do more with them.”

Aitken continued, “The other big winners here are mobile app builders and developers. The competition between brands is increasing the total market for mobile devices, and the number of people using mobile devices has risen astronomically, compared to even three years ago. Within a few years, the market could be at a point where almost everyone has a web-connected mobile device, and almost everyone is depending on them for information and for easy access to businesses.”

Aitken elaborated, “There are two great opportunities for both iOS app developers and Android app developers: business apps and commercial apps. Business apps will make it easier for customers to do business with both small and large businesses. The first businesses that get their apps out to the public are going to be the ones with the first opportunity to make a first impression on potential customers. Apps will give small businesses the best ROI over any other form of advertising. As for commercial apps, there will be a lot of room for games and apps to take the place of those currently found on computers.”

Aitken concluded, “Right now might be the best time in history to develop a mobile app. We are on the cusp of a potential market explosion that could dwarf the dot com boom. If you got left behind then, you have a second chance now.”
