Job-matching website OneShift.com.au welcomes Small Business portfolio's continued inclusion in Cabinet
OneShift.com.au Media Release - 6 Feb 2013:  Startup jobs site welcomes Bowen's small business lead

The head of job-matching website OneShift.com.au, Genevieve George, has welcomed incoming Higher Education and Skills Minister Chris Bowen’s adoption of the Federal Government’s Small Business portfolio.

"Following the Global Financial Crisis, small business is a key driver to rebuilding the Australian economy, and its ongoing presence in Cabinet is a good sign," Ms George said.

Ms George also supported the appointment of Federal Small Business Commissioner Mark Brennan, who started in the post in January.

"There is now a truly national voice in government for small business who will work closely with employers, employees and jobseekers across Australia," said Ms George.

Ms George, 22, is the entrepreneur behind the startup job-matching site, which has averaged 10,000 jobseeker and employer registrations a month since launching mid-2012.

"We’ve seen increased casualisation of the Australian workforce post-GFC, and it’s important that employers and jobseekers can connect as quickly and smoothly as possible," Ms George said.

While the unemployment rate has steadied just above five per cent in the past year, there has been a one per cent increase in the number of individuals employed in Australia, mostly in part-time and casual work.

"This just shows it’s increasingly important for jobseekers to use innovative ways to find work," said Ms George. "Employers are also making the most of tight budgets as the economy bounces back."

Later this month, the Federal Parliament's Corporations Joint Committee will deliver findings from its inquiry into the family business sector, which accounts for most small businesses and two-thirds of all Australian firms.

OneShift.com.au is a startup job-matching website that connects jobseekers with employers, based on their location, availability and skills.  Registration is free for both jobseekers and employers, and it is free for employers to advertise jobs.  Employers can connect with up to three potential workers for a small fee.  More than 70,000 jobseekers and employers have signed up at OneShift.com.au since its June 2012 launch.
