IP-Only Telecommunications Selects Avici Routers from Nortel for Network Buildout

Announcement posted by Nortel 12 Feb 2005

IP-Only will deploy Avici Systems QSR routers, to facilitate its rapid growth and international development strategy, helping IP-Only to remain at the forefront of demand for fast, reliable, and secure IP services. Through a strategic OEM agreement with Avici Systems, Nortel integrates, sells and supports Avici's carrierclass core routers as part of its packet-based switching and routing solutions portfolio. Avici Systems is Nortels worldwide preferred partner for IP core routers.
IP-Only delivers IP and Ethernet services, wavelengths and dark fiber to Swedish and international operators, as well as to many of Swedens largest and most demanding enterprises, television and multimedia service providers. IP-Only provides guaranteed capacity and high-quality IP services via its own IP backbone and extensive international peering relationships. IP-Only owns and operates one of the most powerful fiber networks in the Nordic region, connecting major cities including the Nordic capitals and providing wavelengths to Amsterdam, London, and Paris.
"With our growing enterprise and service provider customer base, IP-Only requires a routing platform that enables the fast rollout of services with previously unavailable levels of performance, reliability and scale," said Svante Jurnell, chief executive officer, IP-Only. As one of the fastest growing service providers in the Nordic region, Avicis carrier grade IP routers will be an integral part of IP-Onlys network.
Avici QSR routers will be used to upgrade IP-Onlys current Internet backbone and will provide the carrier with the ability to support escalating customer traffic and new applications through Avicis unique in-service scaling and reliability. The Avici QSR supports in-service hardware and sofware scaling to dramatically decrease the cost of new capacity additions and eliminate service disruptions. Avici routers are the only routers with demonstrated in-service scalability to multi-chassis systems in an operational network, extending the product lifecycle and supporting the rapid expansion of new IP-based services.
By using Avicis NSR, non-stop routing technology, IP-Only is deploying a 99.999 percent reliable backbone to support its customers mission-critical services. NSR delivers breakthrough reliability to IP networks by providing true hot-standby protection of the route controller. NSR not only protects Avici routers against control plane failure, it also enables in-service upgrades and protected configuration changes.
We are very pleased that IP-Only has selected Avici and Nortel to expand its broadband offerings and for delivery of reliable new services, said Rafael de Ory, managing director, EMEA (Europe, Middle East, Africa), Avici. This latest win demonstrates the strength of the strategic relationship between Avici and Nortel and the benefits it brings to our customers.
Avici has distinguished itself in the industry through a consistent focus on carrier-class routing with its TSR, SSR, and QSR platforms. These platforms dramatically simplify the PoP by matching the longevity and the reliability of the Class 4/5 switch with attributes such as 99.999 percent availability, in-service upgrades, multi-generational investment protection, and modular scalability built in from the beginning.
