A King's Cross Landmark Revived
The doors of The Bourbon, an iconic landmark in Sydney’s famous King’s Cross, have been closed since 2010. Now this historic venue is slated to open its doors again thanks to Christopher Cheung, proprietor of the Coogee Bay Hotel. A new, contemporary hotel design will breathe fresh life into The Bourbon, transforming this internationally cherished bar and restaurant into one of Sydney’s hottest new entertainment destinations.

Opened in 1967 by U.S. Air Force veteran Bernie Houghton, The Bourbon is an unforgettable piece of Sydney’s history. Originally called The Bourbon & Beefsteak Bar and Restaurant, the well-known and beloved establishment brought New Orleans style to King’s Cross with its French colonial architecture. This piece of the American Deep South was a welcome comfort to American soldiers on leave from duty during the Vietnam War and provided thousands of guests with enduring memories.

French colonial architecture is distinctive, combining the style and flair of France with elements found in other areas of the world, such as the Caribbean and the West Indies. While this romantic style of architecture is found throughout the world, it came to dominate the Southern regions of the United States, notably Mississippi and Louisiana. New Orleans, especially, is known for its French colonial architecture.

The romantic structures of French colonial design are recognizable by their stately lines and wide, hipped roofs extending over large, inviting porches. These porches, along with numerous windows covering the front of the building, allow air to flow freely through the structure. Tall, narrow sets of French doors and wrought iron decorative details add to the distinctive character of these buildings. Built in this distinctive, familiar style, The Bourbon breathed new life into King’s Cross while making American soldiers feel at home.

Today’s design trends will demand more from The Bourbon’s renewal than a simple restoration of its classic architecture. Modern design demands that a venue provide timeless luxury, accessibility and respect for the history of a building or area. Additionally, modern designs must offer innovative, artistic flair and modern comfort. The skillful blending of traditional and modern elements is the key that allows the best venues to stand out and enjoy enduring success.

After languishing empty for too long, The Bourbon is now undergoing a total reinvention. This majestic building will undergo a dramatic transformation from hollow shell to shining example of modern design. Its classic French colonial facade provides a gorgeous foundation for a fresh, innovative design. An emphasis on stylish, New York inspired interiors promises an elegant, sophisticated dining experience. In keeping with contemporary hotel design trends, The Bourbon’s new design will provide guests with a sense of authenticity and timeless, accessible luxury.

Sydney awaits The Bourbon’s reopening with eager anticipation. With The Bourbon’s vibrant history and deep roots in King’s Cross, a rebirth and renewal of this classic landmark promises to delight Sydney’s residents and entice visitors from around the world. When the new design is unveiled, The Bourbon will come to life once again to energize King’s Cross and create memories for years to come.
