Australian Glider Pilots soar in Argentina

Announcement posted by The Gliding Federation of Australia 11 Feb 2013

Melbourne, Australia.  – Monday 11th, 2013 – The Gliding Federation of Australia (GFA) is proud to announce that the Australian team completed one of our most successful campaigns at the 32nd FAI World Gliding Championships held at Gonzales Chaves, Argentina.

Tobias Geiger finished 2nd and Craig Collings finished 9th in Club Class whilst Allan Barnes finished 6th in World Class. The competition ran over 14 days from the 6th January to the 19th January, 2013. The team was supported by Dave Holbrook, Graham Hennessy, Andrew Wright and Mike Codling as Team Captain.

The Australian team had to overcome obstacles of organising gliders in Argentina and setting up equipment in the time before the competition started. Preparation for the event started two years earlier with the team picked and an aggressive training regime.

The event suffered more than a fair share of rain and subsequent weak gliding conditions. The Australian pilots adjusted to the conditions quickly.

"A great result for Australian Gliding" said Anita Taylor, President GFA. "To have all three team pilots in the top 10 at a world event, with one podium finish, is a great validation of our training programs and the pilots’ dedication."
