No Madness in MIPs Method: Adopt a proven approach or risk data warehousing failure

Announcement posted by MIP 13 Nov 2001

Companies that do not follow a step-by-step methodology when implementing data warehouses are setting themselves up for failure, leading Australian specialist data warehousing company, Management Information Principles (MIP) has warned, as it announced the version 3 of its data warehousing methodology.

MIPs methodology has been developed and refined over a 10-year period and is based on practical Data Warehousing experience across many industry sectors worldwide. The strength of the methodology is proven by MIPs unrivaled track record in the field of Data Warehouse design and delivery. MIP has been successfully involved in over 30 data warehouse projects in the past two years alone.

The data warehousing methodology covers a range of areas including scope, design and implementation; ETL strategy; data quality; meta data management; and a data warehouse health check which identifies and fixes business and technical problems - breathing life back into what MIP Managing Director Steve Hitchman calls the data cemeteries that MIP often finds when it first examines a customers existing environment.

Our methodology is a way of consistently being able to apply and understand business processes, the way data flows underneath those business processes, and how you go about putting them into a relational database that gives you a completely open data architecture. Thats what everybody strives for, and thats precisely what we deliver by using this unique tool, Mr Hitchman said.

Any data warehouse company thats worth its salt has got to have a solid methodology because if an external consultancy is brought in or contractors employed, they will all build in different ways. Without a sound process-driven approach the deliverable simply cannot be guaranteed.

Thats a real danger when data warehouses are already very expensive to build and very easy to stuff up, Mr Hitchman said. MIP doesnt use contractors and we dont subcontract our work to third parties. All our consultants use our methodology, so when they go to a site they can deliver consistently on time and on budget. We are one of the only organisations that can do a fixed price delivery of a data warehouse, which we are able to do because of our approach and our methodology.

After years of refinement, MIPs methodology is now the absolute backbone of the company. I dont believe anyone else in our marketplace has such a sound and focussed approach, Mr Hitchman said.

Unlike other companies who charge clients big dollars for the use of their methodologies, MIPs methodology is an inherent part of our consulting services and is a fundamental component of our consultants toolkit. Mr Hitchman said.
