The Bourbon Restaurant Combines Stone and Timber in Stylish Harmony

Announcement posted by Paul Kelly Design 17 Apr 2013

A Classic Design
Paul Kelly Design announces that The Bourbon’s restaurant is now open and presents itself as a venue that oozes New Orleans charm complemented by its highly classic design. The eating area prominently features harmonizing stone and timber design elements. Head chef James Metcalfe cleverly links live music and food with a distinct New Orleans vibe.

The combination of timber and stone is somewhat unusual in this classical restaurant design. Where stainless steel and glass usually rule, timber and stone actually convey a feeling of warmth and earthy comfort. When put together by expert commercial designer Paul Kelly, these style elements work together to create a harmonizing whole. The cohesive look and feel of the eating and entertainment area is due in large part to the prominent bar, which supports the visual aesthetics of the timber.

Since it is possible to have too much of a good thing, Kelly has decided to use black and off-white carpeting as a variety-introducing element that nevertheless remains in keeping with the New Orleans theme. Along the walls, the expert has chosen to bounce squares off smaller rectangles. Plenty of warm light fixtures further add a sense of harmony. This Bourbon incarnation is very different from its prior looks. Because of the harmonizing style elements, guests immediately feel drawn in. It was a bit of a gamble to focus on warmth first and sleek lines later. Nevertheless, the resulting feelings of comfort and belonging very easily make this the type of venue that guests return to repeatedly.

A closer look at the various textures used during the design of The Bourbon’s interior also proves that Paul Kelly Design has a firm understanding of material use. Too much texture is off-putting while too little creates a one-dimensional setting. Getting it just right creates the type of visual harmony that draws in the eye and keeps it occupied. Aesthetically pleasing on a number of levels, the restaurant’s interior is an expert study in commercial design done to attract the targeted clientele of the Kings Cross neighbourhood. Exuding fun and excitement, the restaurant does not scream its welcome but rather gently whispers it and draws in the guests in this manner.
