Is Your Business Sellable?

Announcement posted by de2 Communications 17 Apr 2013

Is Australia a land of entrepreneurs or self-employed?
17 APRIL 2013, SYDNEY – With more than two million small businesses operating in Australia, one would think that we have one of the highest numbers of entrepreneurs per capita in the world.

However, a closer look at the figures would show that over 1.3 million of these businesses do not employ any staff. This means that many of the so called business owners are actually self-employed.

While it is commendable that many Australians are taking the initiative to be self-employed, it would be far more beneficial if we have more business owners and entrepreneurs.

Ty Wiggins, Director at Converge Business Networks (http://www.convergebusiness.com.au/), said many Australian business owners are still grappling with the issue of whether they are self-employed or business owners.

“We had some vigorous debates on this topic (is your business sellable/saleable) amongst our members. It is one of those issues that force you to think hard about what you’re trying to accomplish (with your business) and whether you really have a sellable/saleable business or just being self-employed,” Wiggins said.

In his book “Built to Sell”, serial entrepreneur John Warrillow, challenges business owners to think hard whether they are building a sellable (saleable) business or working their way to being self-employed for life.

He said, “Many people start a business around themselves. The downside of this is that it ties you up to the company. And most likely you will end up working more and harder than when you’re employed (by another company).”

He added, “Most people dream of a work-life balance that’s why they set up their own business. But you can’t have that balance if you’re spending 24/7 working.”

Warrillow said business owners should put processes and systems in place so that it can run without depending entirely on one person. This will also make the business more attractive and sellable in the future.

In his most recent visit to Australia, Warrillow conducted a workshop with Converge Business Networks members. During the workshop, Warrillow discussed various topics including:

•    Procedures and processes that need to be put in place to make a business sellable
•    Make the business run without you (the owner) involved all the time
•    Business scalability trifecta that need to be in place.

Is your business sellable/saleable? Or do you want to be self-employed for life? Converge Business Networks offers The Sellability Score, an online questionnaire that allows you to assess the value of your business in about 13 minutes.
