1 in 5 – a shocking statistic affecting 59,000 Australian children every year – you can help to reduce it!

Announcement posted by Beauty Corner 03 Jul 2013

IT’S a statistic that has shocked the nation yet one that all Australians can play a role in reducing. Research* shows that 1 in 5 Australian children will be sexually assaulted before their 18th birthday – or 59,000 kids every year.

SYDNEY - 1ST OF JULY: National child protection advocate Bravehearts has launched a strategy to halve that figure by 2020. It will do this with its breakthrough research The 3 Piers – Educate, Empower, Protect – solid foundations to make Australia the safest place in the world to raise a child.

From July 1 Bravehearts will partner with Dollar Cosmetic Club, the Social Enterprise Supporter arm of Beauty Corner, to launch its 1in5.org.au campaign to raise awareness and much needed funds to achieve its vision.

The cutting edge campaign aims to engage the community to take a public stand against child sexual assault by showing their support with a visual 1 in 5.

Driven by social media, supporters are encouraged to take a photo of a 1 in 5 hand gesture, upload the picture to the 1in5.org.au site and then share it with their friends on Facebook and Twitter etc.

Supporting the cause is a win/win – savvy online shoppers can donate to Bravehearts by purchasing quality cosmetics for just $1 and Dollar Cosmetic Club will donate that dollar to Bravehearts.

Dollar Cosmetic Club will offer new $1 dollar cosmetic deals every day during the month-long campaign so people will have the opportunity to not only support the education and protection of Aussie kids, but also stock up on their favourite cosmetic brands.

Bravehearts Founder and Executive Director Hetty Johnston said with the support of digital retail and online consumers, Bravehearts can inch closer to achieving its goal.

“This is a brilliant way to raise awareness around the issue of child sexual assault and we applaud Dollar Cosmetic Club for helping us to raise much needed funds so that we can better educate, empower and protect Australian children from this abhorrent crime,” she said.

“I encourage everyone to get involved – simply by taking a picture of their 1in5 hand gesture and posting it to the 1in5.org.au site to show they care about this issue and to play an interactive role in helping to stop child sexual assault.”

Dollar Cosmetic Club Co-Founder Issac Elnekave, said the initiative is a simple, effective and fun way to help Australian kids, while also providing consumers with top line cosmetics at a bargain basement price. Last year Dollar Cosmetic Club raised $44,735 for the McGrath Foundation.

“This interactive initiative is part of our corporate social responsibility commitment to those kids in need and we are looking forward to a viral campaign that really makes a difference. Simply visit 1in5.org.au and get involved.”

Leading digital agency Fluency is a partner and key supporter of 1in5.org.au.
