SCO Outlines SCOx Web Services Strategy For Future Growth

Announcement posted by SCO Group 01 May 2003

Company to roll out technology framework for integrated Web services applications
The SCOR Group (SCO) (Nasdaq: SCOX), a leading provider of business software solutions, has announced the company's SCOx strategy, a technology framework that will allow SCO, its resellers and developers to provide the benefits of Web services to small-to-medium businesses (SMBs) and branch offices. Using industry standards such as XML, SOAP and UDDI, SCO and its partners will deliver Web services-enabled applications. SCO's UNIXR and LinuxR operating systems, the foundation of SCOx, will be updated to better enable Web services.
The SCOx framework will allow customers to continue implementing SCO solutions in a traditional on premise environment, or access their applications and services online. SCOx will also allow for the integration of any Web services-enabled application including MicrosoftR .NET and SunOne J2EE applications.
"SCOx allows our small and medium sized business customers and their resellers to leverage their SCO UNIX and Linux platforms, while taking advantage of the emerging world of Web services," said Kieran O'Shaughnessy, SCO's regional general manager for Australia and New Zealand. "This will make an attractive solution for our customers who want to worry less about their IT infrastructure and focus more on growing their businesses."
More than 4,000 applications currently run on SCO platforms, including many that are focused on specific vertical markets such as manufacturing, pharmacy, retail and finance. SCOx enables applications to integrate with e-business solutions such as SCObiz - SCO's technology that provides e-commerce solutions to SMBs and branch offices. This integration allows SCOx customers to share information between traditional applications and e-business services. For example, data can be shared real-time between an onsite inventory management system and an online shopping cart.
SCO empowers resellers to offer customers the option of purchasing applications for traditional on site installation or through an online subscription model. Partners may also choose to have SCO host their SCOx-enabled software applications.
"Through their reseller channel, SCO has been a mainstay of the SMB and branch office markets for many years," said Laura DiDio, senior analyst, The Yankee Group, an IT industry research firm. "SCOx should play very nicely with many of SCO's stakeholders since it allows vertical application providers a greater reach to customers through Web services as well as provide SCO resellers with a recurring revenue stream."
SCO has already begun rolling out portions of the SCOx framework to allow developers to enable their applications for Web services. Developers interested in obtaining more information are encouraged to visit www.sco.com/scox
