Bridging the gap between IT and management essential for business graduates

Announcement posted by Macquarie University, Faculty of Business and Economics 04 Jul 2013

A new university degree will help bridge the gap between IT and business management in today’s increasingly data driven environment.

The new Bachelor of Business Analytics, offered by the Faculty of Business and Economics at Macquarie University, will give business graduates the skills and knowledge necessary to understand data, information management and analytics in the rapidly changing business environment.

According to Associate Professor Hume Winzar at Macquarie University, Faculty of Business and Economics, previously most study programs focussed on data and analytics have been founded in the IT discipline.

“Business graduates have been missing out on crucial business analytics skills. This degree prepares graduates to address the technological changes and increase in data affecting business today,” said Associate Professor Winzar.

Offered for the first time in semester one 2014, this innovative degree has been developed in consultation with industry and gives graduates exposure to what they can expect in the workplace; where data is key and collaboration with IT is essential.

“Technological advancements have led to an increase in the amount of consumer data available, as well as improvements in the ability of organisations and governments to capture, store and use such data. The data revolution has increased the employment demand for persons with the abilities to extract value from these sources of data.”

“The Bachelor of Business Analytics is a multidisciplinary program which will equip students with knowledge and skills in the areas of quantitative analysis, business information systems, database programming and business,” added Associate Professor Winzar.

The degree is completed over three years and covers quantitative analysis, business information systems, database programming and business principles.

The degree is for students seeking to build their career in business and who are interested in how data offers insights into business strategy and operations.

The degree will be showcased at the 2013 Macquarie University Open Day.
