iPlanet(tm) Application and integration server platform

Announcement posted by iPlanet E-Commerce Solutions 19 Jun 2001

SOAP support added to iPlanet Application Server 6.0 New releases of iPlanet's Forte(tm) for Java, Web Integration Server products to enable rapid development and deployment of Standards-based Web Services

iPlanet E-Commerce Solutions, a Sun-Netscape Alliance, has announced new product upgrades to its application and integration server platforms that are critical to the rapid development and deployment of web services based on Java(tm) technology and XML standards.

These enhancements continue to drive forward the Sun(tm) Open Net Environment (Sun ONE) vision and present developers with the advanced software necessary to rapidly develop and deploy web services.

Significant additions to the iPlanet Platform include:
* New developer-level SOAP support within the iPlanet(tm) Application Server 6.0 software, including sample applications. This offering allows developers to leverage the Sun ONE architecture to integrate business components into a web services framework.
* Immediate availability of the iPlanet(tm) Message Queue for Java, a complete implementation of the Java(tm) Messaging Service application programming interface (API), which provides web services developers with the critical messaging infrastructure required to reliably route messages between disparate applications and services.
* The iPlanet(tm) Web Server 6.0 and iPlanet Application Server 6.0 integration with Forte(tm) for Java release 3.0 early access software to accelerate the creation of web services upon a robust J2EE(tm)- and XML-based platform.

"iPlanet E-Commerce Solutions has made overall scalability, performance and reliability enhancements to its #1 ranked application server and further enables customers to accommodate the exploding popularity of web-based applications," said Duncan Bennet, Managing Director, iPlanet E-Commerce Solutions, Australia & New Zealand. "The iPlanet Platform leverages the vast store of Java programming skill already present in the developer community, and turns it into a significant strategic advantage in speeding time to market."

Web services are generally described as loosely coupled software components collaborating across multiple Internet protocol-based networks. Building web services upon the iPlanet Platform which includes e-commerce, portal, application server, integration, communications and directory services components, allows organisations to capitalise on the infrastructure's long history of delivering maximum scalability, availability, reliability and performance under a wide range of user loads and deployment scenarios.

iPlanet upgrades Application Server 6.0 software
The iPlanet Application Server 6.0 software now supports an open source implementation of SOAP. This pairing allows organisations to marry the interoperability benefits of a J2EE-certified platform with the ability to leverage an XML-based protocol, resulting in a strong foundation for web services delivery.

iPlanet E-Commerce Solutions launches iPlanet Message Queue for Java
The iPlanet Message Queue for Java (formerly Java Message Queue) now includes greater flexibility in how messages can be transported between different applications, a 100% Java-based implementation, and a highly configurable and flexible queuing model.

Additionally, the iPlanet Message Queue for Java is now integrated with iPlanet Application Server and iPlanet(tm) Integration Server, providing an end-to-end Java platform for the deployment of robust web services. This also forms a key architectural component of Sun ONE, solving the complex challenge of communicating messages among disparate applications that may span multiple worldwide networks or systems. This frees developers to focus on creating the business logic within Java technology applications rather than tedious networking details, both reducing time to market and conserving resources.

The iPlanet Message Queue for Java is built on the Java platform to fully capture the enterprise standards demanded by the Java Message Service API (1.0.2). This represents a significant improvement over traditional messaging solutions, which were typically based on proprietary, vendor-sponsored APIs that limited user flexibility.

iPlanet Integrates Forte for Java 3.0 with iPlanet Web and Application Servers
The integration between Forte for Java release 3.0 and iPlanet Web and Application Server software is a key component of the Sun ONE technology vision, allowing developers to be more productive and facilitate easier
creation of web services. With the availability of Forte for Java under an early access program from Sun Microsystems, developers can now leverage the industry's leading application services platform to deliver a web service environment based upon open technology standards, including J2EE and XML. Forte for Java software is an extensible integrated development environment (IDE) for developing client-side and server-side Java applications.

Additionally, with today's immediate availability of the iPlanet Web Server 6.0, both enterprise developers and service providers can leverage a wide range of new features that improve quality of service through high reliability and availability.
