What to Look for in Wedding Photographers

Announcement posted by Peter Edwards Photography 23 Aug 2013

Perth wedding photographer reveals the most important things to look for when hiring a wedding photographer.
Perth, WA, August 23, 2013 - Wedding season, which was once translated as “summer,” is now a nine-month marathon that begins in September. As someone who has practised wedding photography in Perth for most of his professional life, Peter Edwards, owner and operator of Peter Edwards Photography, is often asked what makes a great photographer and what to look for when hiring one.

Edwards recommends, above all, that anyone looking for a photographer should first look at a photographer's work. For photographers such as Edwards, who has a website full of stunning photographs, it is easy for one to do his or her “due diligence” simply by clicking on to their website and looking at pictures.

The next thing Edwards recommends is that the photographer have plenty of testimonials from satisfied clients. Couples are proud of great wedding photos and are happy to “show them off” and recommend their wedding photographer to others.

Another factor Edwards feels to be important is rapport. If a wedding photographer doesn't have rapport and can't make people comfortable, he or she won't be able to get people to relax enough for their inner beauty to shine through in the photos.

It is easy to determine rapport by simply talking to the photographer. It is estimated by many psychologists and business analysts that most people know whether or not they like someone, or are comfortable with them within two seconds.

Edwards also recommends that a photographer have the best in professional equipment. With the advent of digital technology and the competitive pricing, many so hobby photographers have bought SLR digital cameras at electronics stores, put up websites and called themselves “wedding photographers.” While a high-priced digital camera is a great start, it is just that: a great start.

A professional photographer needs more than just a camera. They also need a selection of lenses and back up equipment. Then, of course, they need both hardware and software that can help them get the best out of the photos they have taken. And that’s just the technical side.  A professional photographer is also an artist. He/she will be able to advise on locations to use at specific times of the day, where lighting is best, will have an eye for designing an image as well as  being able to anticipate those great candid moments. There is a lot more to photographing a wedding than buying a camera, pointing and clicking.

According to Edwards, couples must be thorough when selecting a wedding photographer: “It is too easy in this era for people to represent themselves in whatever they want. In the case of wedding photographers, that can have severe consequences for a couple. Nobody wants to have their special day ruined by bad wedding photos. Worse yet, some inept photographers have actually botched entire weddings, leaving couples with no memories of their special day.”

Edwards continued, “If you want a professional photographer, you have to look for professional results. This usually means a lot of experience, too. I know that everyone starts somewhere, but you should never trust your wedding to an inexperienced photographer. The only exception is if they are part of a crew that includes an experienced photographer.”

Edwards concluded, “It's a lot easier to find the right photographer than one might think, but you have to do the work involved in finding one. If you don't do your due diligence, you could end up with amateur photos--or even none at all. That is simply unacceptable.”
