Outstanding on the Pier to highlight NSW wines with a fresh, fun take

There’ll be no need to press the bow ties for this years revamped 2013 NSW Wine Awards in Sydney on Friday 1 November, as the awards event recognising the best wines from the diverse state of New South Wales adopts a more casual persona.

In just one of several changes to the NSW Wine Awards, which have been running since 1996, the trophy presentations to those among the NSW Top 40 will take place over a Friday lunch on the shores of Sydney Harbour.

Tagged ‘Outstanding on the Pier’, the new format will include a consumer event on Thursday 31 October at Sydney’s Pier 2 at Walsh Bay, which will feature around 100 top Gold, Silver and trophy winning wines all available to the public for tasting. The $40 ticketed event will also showcase an excellent selection of NSW seasonal produce while attendees can also keep their souvenir glass. One very lucky, and hopefully thirsty guest, will win a fabulous selection of this year’s Top 40 NSW wines – an outstanding prize valued at $1500.

The following day, the first official Friday of the ‘silly season’, will see the ‘Outstanding on the Pier’ lunch at The Sebel, Pier One. The MC for the day will be much-loved wine commentator, blogger and now wine-bar co-owner Patrick Haddock – and who knows, his online parody character ‘Beer Spills’ may even make a cameo appearance. The laughter and camaraderie among industry colleagues is sure to flow amidst the sunshine as much as the award and trophy-winning wines, all matched to a $150 per person three course meal – making this one of the last official industry catch-ups before Christmas and the 2014 vintage.

Entries for this year’s awards have now closed and the judging of more than 700 wines will take place on 23 and 24 September. Chaired by Huon Hooke, the judging panel is comprised of well-respected individuals Mike Bennie, Mike DeGaris, Nick Bulleid MW, Bryan Currie, P.J Charteris, Patrick Haddock, Drew Tuckwell, Tom Hogan and Patrick White.

The Outstanding on the Pier Top 100 Tasting is open to the public from 5:30pm – 8:30pm on Thursday 31 October, whilst members of the media and trade are welcome also from between 2pm and 3:30pm. The Outstanding on the Pier lunch at The Sebel will kick off from 12, for 12:30pm.
