Australia's Largest Private Book Manufacturer Deploys Tarantella For Secure Remote Access To Oracle Enterprise Applications

Announcement posted by Tarantella Inc 16 Apr 2003

Tarantella supports major overhaul of information systems infrastructure; delivers centralised administration and secure access across thin client network and the internet
The Tarantella deployment supports a massive undertaking by Ligare to replace its entire information systems infrastructure over the next five months with the goal of increasing its competitiveness and profitability by automating basic business operations, improving efficiencies and significantly reducing operating costs.
The key features of Ligare's new systems are:
1) Secure remote access and centralised administration - Tarantella
2) A standardised operating environment - Sun Solaris
3) A new, integrated business system with ERP, financials, CRM and distribution modules - Oracle mPowered Manufacturing
Tarantella Enterprise 3 allows organisations to consolidate the deployment and management of applications in a secure centralised environment. Tarantella provides secure web-enabled access to UNIXR, Linux, mainframe and WindowsR business applications, and software written for the JavaT platform, without rewriting code or replacing any application programs or interfaces.
Following a period of very strong and sustained growth, Ligare's existing information infrastructure was no longer scaling to meet
business demands. When faced with rapidly escalating IT support costs, Ligare made the decision to be the first Australian customer for Oracle mPowered Manufacturing, a suite of pre-configured applications based on the Oracle 11i e-business suite and database, customised by mPower Systems. Ligare also chose to deploy a new thin client network based on Sun Microsystems hardware.
The project will see the new Oracle suite implemented and administered from a central Sun Microsystems server and then made available across Ligare's thin client network to multiple manufacturing and distribution locations, including the head office, via Tarantella. Remote users will access the Oracle business applications across the internet, also via Tarantella.
In addition, Tarantella will be used to provide secure access to Ligare's existing financial system and thin network users will access the StarOffice suite and email via their SunRay client browsers.
Ligare's information systems manager, Dominic McDonald has led the project and said that the Tarantella deployment was a critical element in the new information infrastructure.
"Tarantella was the only solution that delivered the cross-platform support we needed, providing secure remote access in a timely and cost effective way," he said. "The Tarantella software enables our applications to be immediately available over our thin client network and to our remote users across the web, without the need to change or rewrite any code. This will deliver significant cost savings at an implementation level and ongoing through centralised administration."
McDonald said that one of Tarantella's key strengths was to monitor network connections and maximise data transmission speed. "Our Tarantella network will be accessed through our corporate WAN and across the internet. In addition, staff at each of our four factories will be able to update information into the Oracle database in real-time using a wireless connection. Tarantella will monitor these connections and ensure that our network operates at the highest speed possible at any point in time."
The costs savings associated with this project are significant. McDonald points out that with Tarantella all updates are delivered from a central location and customising access for each and every user is as simple as dragging and dropping information into each user's Tarantella profile. The result he says, "is a massive reduction in labour time, better security and reporting, and 24/7 access to business critical applications".
Dominic McDonald also points out that by selecting the pre-configured Oracle suite from mPower Systems, "Ligare has saved almost 75 per cent of the upfront licensing costs normally associated with such an implementation and greatly reduced the rollout time. The introduction of the open-source StarOffice application suite also means that we have saved in excess of A$30,000 in licensing costs when compared to the MS Office platform."
