Training College opens its doors to the public – helping Gold Coast careers in childcare

For Immediate Release

GOLD COAST – October 12, 2013 – Kool Kids Training College, a Registered Training Organisation (RTO) specialising in Children’s Services and Childcare training is today opening its doors to the public and holding its inaugural Open Day.

The Open Day is intended to profile the colleges’ Childcare and Children’s Services courses for prospective students.

“The Open Day is a fun and informative day for those on the Coast who are aiming to enter or grow their careers in this thriving industry,” said Bruce Coulson, CEO.

“We understand that decisions on career development in 2014 are happening now as the school end of year is fast approaching. Furthermore, with Mum’s returning to work at an increasing rate, the option of re-engaging or commencing a career in childcare is very appealing.  The hours and rewarding nature of the work are not evident in many industries,” he said.

Mr Coulson also indicated that on the Coast there was a growing market for employment with new centres opening regularly. Population growth in SE Queensland is fuelling the opening and expansion of child care centres in this region and the growth means that Child Care Centres are in constant search of Child Care workers. For year 11 and 12 students contemplating employment next year, now is an ideal time to investigate the child care industry, particularly on the Coast as there are a lot of job vacancies.

Mr Coulson then highlighted an additional Australia wide legislative change that is driving a further requirement for training in the childcare industry.

By 2014, every childcare worker in Australia must have, at a minimum, a Certificate III in Children's Services or Early Childhood Education and Care. To give an insight to the numbers, that means currently there are nearly thirty thousand unqualified childcare workers who must get their certificates in the next year,” he said.

It was this legislative change, and combined with the fact that Mr Coulson is committed to the industry operating the chain of Kool Kids Child Care Centres on the Gold Coast that led to the creation of the Kool Kids Training College.

“It is a fact that nearly 70% of Child Care Centre providers have reported a difficulty in being able to find qualified staff*,” he said.

The skills shortages affect all states and territories of Australia but are most prominent in NSW and QLD where there are simply not enough workers with the correct qualifications.

Mr Coulson said the Kool Kids Training College Open Day would provide an opportunity for discussions on careers and childcare training requirements, including discussing and outlining eligibility of many prospective students for Government funding.

“I applaud all levels of government for getting behind the industry, investing in apprenticeships and subsidies and making the tough decisions to introduce legislative change that requires a higher level of certification for childcare staff. These are the carers for our most precious assets and therefore must know how to manage a day in the life of a child,” he said.

“We are expecting a great turn out from those in the industry and those looking to get their careers started in childcare.Come and see us in action – you never know, it may well be the day that defines your career direction,” Mr Coulson said.
