D-Link Powers Up Wireless Networks

Announcement posted by D-Link Australia 23 Apr 2002

DWL-P100 extends coverage of wireless networks and solves power access issues
D-Link, a designer and manufacturer of networking, data communications, broadband and digital electronic technologies, has launched a Power Over Ethernet Adapter, the DWL-P100, which supplies operational power to wireless network access points. It eliminates the need to use an AC-DC power converter and allows companies to extend the coverage of their wireless local area network (LAN).

The D-Link DWL-P100 Power Over Ethernet adapter enables users to mount devices such as a wireless access point virtually anywhere in a building without the need to locate it near an electrical outlet. This solves issues associated with electrical power access to awkward areas such as roofs and ceilings.

Power Over Ethernet is designed to take advantage of unused cable pairs in a standard UTP Category 5 cable, only two pairs are used for Ethernet data transfer. The DWL-P100 allows the user to supply DC power and Ethernet connectivity via a single cable. It supplies operational power to devices with an Ethernet port and power requirements that do not exceed 5 Volts/1 Amp, extending the power reach to 100 metres while also protecting devices from possible damage due to power-surges.

The D-Link DWL-P100 consists of the Base Unit, which inserts DC voltage into the unused wires (pins 4,5,7 and 8), and the Terminal Unit, which splits the Ethernet data and DC power at the other end, connected by a single Ethernet cable.

This is an excellent solution for Australian and New Zealand businesses that want to extend the coverage of their wireless local network, said Maurice Famularo, channel and marketing manager, D-Link Australia. It cuts costs and adds convenience for the user.
