Fund Manager, La Trobe Financial has recently confirmed to the market that it received its first investment from a Malaysian Chinese investor for the $5 million Significant Investor Visa 888.

The key attributes to the investment were the attractive yield on the investment product, the impressive 60 year history of La Trobe Financial in the asset class and solid operations that attracted her to apply for her Significant Investor Visa (“SIV”) through La Trobe Financial.

The SIV is a permanent residency visa which was launched at the end of 2012. To qualify, potential investors must invest $5 million or more into complying investments for a minimum of four years prior to applying for permanent residence. Compared to other visas, the SIV is a streamlined visa under the business and innovations stream. The differences with this visa, are that there are no English language threshold requirements for applications, no age limit or the need to satisfy the innovations points test which apply to normal business innovations visas. The migrant investor is required to reside in Australia
for a minimum of 160 days over the four year investment period at which point the investor can apply for a permanent visa.

La Trobe Financial understands how important the Asian region market is to Australia’s financial future and more particular by how important China is. In 2009, La Trobe Financial made a significant commitment to grow its operations internationally with a particular focus on China and opened its first office in Shanghai with a dedicated international team who speak fluent Mandarin and Cantonese.

La Trobe Financial is committed to developing long-standing relationships with its Chinese partners. In line with its China strategy, La Trobe Financial provides a successful Professional Placement Scholarship Program (Program) designed specifically to benefit participants who, while they are already experienced managers (and work within the wealth management, banking and finance industry), would benefit from a structured executive training program in an international environment. The Program now in its fifth year has had senior managers from the 5 leading banks in China including China Development Bank, Agricultural Bank of China and Bank of Communications.

La Trobe Financial’s Chief Wealth Management Officer, Mr Randal Williams said: “our Program has become famous in China and by demand, we are now running a Symposium in Shanghai and Beijing as part of our Australian Program.”

La Trobe Financial also shares a floor at its Sydney office in Chifley Towers with its good friend Agricultural Bank of China. Mr Williams commented “our China relationships have grown dramatically because of the significant investment we have made in our China Program. We are now seeing the fruit from the trees we planted back in 2009.”
