Granny Hilary’s Got 7 Grandchildren and a Whole Lot of Rhythm

Announcement posted by Wise Up Marketing 03 Feb 2014

Hilary Newman, or “Granny Hilary” as she is affectionately known, has been coming along to The Rhythm Tree family music classes at CERES East Brunswick since 2010, joining her 3 children and 6 grandchildren, while fast becoming 'Granny' to the community of families who attend.

Granny Hilary a Wedding Celebrant from Northcote first came to The Rhythm Tree with daughter Julia and her grandson Isaac and granddaughter Phoebe, now 8 and 4, soon they were joined by daughter Helen with grandson Kai, now 5 ½ and it wasn’t long until Hilary’s son Martin was taking a day off work each week to come along with her grandsons Kees and Joost, now 3 and 2.

“Granny Hilary has become adopted mum and gran to many families who have been lucky enough to have her in their class” says Gillian Lee founder of The Rhythm Tree Family Music Classes. “It's people like Hilary that help to create that wonderful sense of community which is what The Rhythm Tree is all about.”

Granny Hilary is planning to start back in 2014 with Kees, Joost and Anton, and soon Helen’s new baby x.

“So few activities for children give the opportunity to involve grannies like me, and if they do we are usually on the sidelines clapping and taking photos. Gillian has created a magical space where families can come together and develop a love for music” said Hilary “All through the week the children are still singing songs from class, and I can join in with them, it is such a special bond.”

Gillian adds “She is a great role model not only for the children but also for the other mums and dads and grandparents in class. She's happy to boogie on down to all genres of music, bark like a dog and waddle around the room like a duck as well as being involved in 3 part harmonies and drumming circles. We just love her!”

With over 20 years experience in education Gillian’s passion for music led her to become one of only a handful of Music Together® teachers in Australia. She launched her Melbourne based Music Together® school, The Rhythm Tree in 2010, which now operates out of CERES in East Brunswick. Classes run Monday – Saturday starting early February.
