Victorian grain farmer Ian Goodwin has been announced as the Durum Grower of the Year for 2014.

The Award, which is sponsored by San Remo, is designed to recognise the contribution of farmers who grow and produce quality Durum for use in making quality pasta products.

Mr Goodwin, who operates a 5,700 hectare farming operation in the Lillimur and Kaniva district, said he was surprised and honoured to have been selected for the prestigious title, which was announced at the Carnevale Festival in Adelaide on Saturday, 8 February.

“I have been growing durum wheat for about five years now as one component of my farming activity and there is no doubt that it produces a premium grain product,” Mr Goodwin said.

“I thank San Remo for this award. Not only is it an excellent company to deal with, but my family are big fans of San Remo Pasta – so it is good to see our durum wheat come full circle and end up on our table at dinner time as well,” he said.

In addition to growing durum wheat, the 59-year old father of two also produces other wheat varieties and fava beans on his property.

"While I am one of the largest Durum growers in the district, this Award win is also great recognition of the efforts of all farmers who are committed to producing quality Durum," Mr Goodwin said.

Southern Australia Durum Growers Association President, Mr Mark Hill, offered his congratulations to Mr Goodwin for the accolade and said it served as motivation to the growing number of farmers choosing to grow Durum as part of their broader farming activity.

“The Award offers important recognition to those farmers who are diligent and loyal Durum growers, who have continued to stick with it despite the seasonal issues that have plagued them in the last harvest or so,” Mr Hill said.

“Many Durum growers have seen a tough season, and an Award of this calibre helps them to hang in there and reaffirms their commitment to producing only the best Durum wheat that goes into San Remo pasta,” he said.
