Make your time count: Volunteer this Starlight Day

Announcement posted by Access Public Relations 20 Feb 2014

2,000 volunteers needed to support sick Aussie kids

Starlight Children’s Foundation urgently needs volunteers to help raise $1.5 million to support seriously ill and hospitalised children around Australia this Starlight Day.

Starlight is calling for more than 2,000 volunteers to hit the streets this Starlight Day on 2 May to sell merchandise and collect donations in central business districts and train stations, or in shopping centres on 1-4 May.

Volunteers can also host a Star-BQ, Starlight’s take on the traditional Aussie BBQ, in their local community throughout April and May to raise funds.

Held nationally, Starlight Day is Starlight's biggest annual fundraising event and aims to raise much-needed funds to support the long-term wellbeing of sick kids and their families.

The fundraising target of $1.5 million would allow Starlight to support more than 40,000 sick kids and teens through its in-hospital programs for one year.

Starlight Chief Executive, Louise Baxter said: "Volunteers are vital to helping make Starlight’s programs a reality for those who need them most.

Taking part in Starlight Day is a fun and inspiring experience, as helping to raise just $39 connects one child to Starlight’s in-hospital programs for one year."

Starlight receives no government funding and relies on the generosity of the community to help deliver its innovative programs including the Starlight Express Rooms, run by Captain Starlight, which are medical-free havens offering an escape from the stress and boredom of hospital life.

Individuals and community groups are encouraged to get involved in Starlight Day, to donate, volunteer and help fundraise.

To find out how you can become a volunteer and help Starlight recruit others in your local community, go to www.starlightday.org.au or phone 1300 727 827.
