Do You Need Retraining?

Announcement posted by ACS Distance Education 17 Mar 2014

- Rethink Retraining
Many people who are looking at a change of profession think that retraining is necessary in order to move onto a different job in another industry.

Considering the rate that the world is changing, the idea of retraining is outdated. Would it be helpful to learn yet another skill that might or might not be needed in a few years time when the industry is no longer around in your area?

In saying this however, there are skills and knowledge that everybody needs to be successful in today’s world. Basic foundation skills can be transferable and used across multiple jobs and industries. Traditional, mainstream education does not reflect the changing world and does not prepare students for the rapidly changing world.

There are many things that you need to consider when you are looking at developing your skills.

Think about these questions- Do you need more education? What kind of education do you need? What will you get from education? What do you really need from education?

Test yourself here:

1. Do you think you have learnt everything that you could possibly learn in order to be successful in your life?
Being self- aware and knowing what your strengths and weaknesses are can help you develop as a person and know what you should be learning.

2. Are you connected in your industry?
In today’s world networking is critical. If you are not connected with what is happening in your industry (trends, developments, innovations), you are going to miss vital opportunities. Networking is a vital skill and important for any career.

3. Do you know how to find reliable and accurate information?
Research skills are important for everyone. This involves more than just using Google.

4. Do you openly do you accept change?
Seeing change as opportunity will improve your career prospects. If you see change as disruptive or a difficulty, you are less likely to be as successful.

5. Can you think outside the box in order to solve problems?
Lateral thinking does not always come naturally to all people.

6. Can you communicate effectively?
Listening appropriately is as important as talking. Understanding what is being said and being able to respond are vital life skills in both business and personal relationship development.

7. Are you an organised thinker?
Are you thinking of so many things at one time, that you become confused about what you need to be doing?

8. Do you think learning is less important than qualifications and being qualified will guarantee career success?
If you do you have an impediment to career success.

9. Are you IT savy?
Computers are not the way of the future, they are everyday life. No matter what industry you work in, you will be affected by technology.

If you answered in the negative to more than one of the questions, you may need to undertake further training. ACS Courses are written with the above skills in consideration. Contact one of our course advisors today. They will help you to identify the best training options for you.
