On Sunday March 30th episode 1 of the highly anticipated comedy web series The Casuals will go live on YouTube.

The series, which is loosely based on the lives of the young creatives who wrote it, chronicles the journey of twenty-‐something’s living in inner city Sydney attempting to follow their dreams whilst working casually in a wine call centre to stay afloat. Series creators, Catherine Kelleher and Arka Das, who also play characters in the series, met in this very setting. They quickly found mutual connection in the call centre environment; a breeding ground for colourful characters and in turn general hilarity.

Catherine, who is also known as critically acclaimed pop songwriter/performer Catcall, is no stranger to the struggles of supporting yourself as a musician in Australia. While Arka, who plays the supporting role of Farid in ABC's upcoming drama The Code, has balanced a myriad of interesting day jobs to support his dream of being a working actor. Arka comments ‘the creative process was hilarious. We quickly realised our own lives are full of material. That’s The Casuals, it’s a bit like our collective diaries.’ After spending some time developing the concept and characters, the pair then decided to produce a pilot episode to test the waters. It was then that successful Australian actress and writer Miranda O’Hare, already cast to play the role of Amanda, came onboard as a writer.

The overwhelming response to the pilot episode encouraged the trio to setup Scusi Productions and work towards producing an 8 episode series whilst dabbling in the world of online sketch comedy. The young creatives again found themselves pulling off the impossible-‐ they raised over 10K to get series 1 of The Casuals made. The success of this campaign perhaps largely in credit to series co-‐creator Catherine, she comments, ‘Crowd funding through Pozible has been really empowering. We’ve been so excited that our friends, peers and even total strangers saw the good in our project and wanted to support it.’ The truthfulness and originality of the series lies in the personalization of the storytelling and this is perhaps the gem within The Casuals.

The Casuals delivers again on performance and it is a web series that deserves to be seen. Series co-‐ writer and actor Miranda comments, ‘Our intention is not simply to make a web series. Our dream and ultimate goal for The Casuals is for it to be on television. We really believe in it.'

Impressively shot and edited, The Casuals is a television quality series. The end result of the team’s hard work is a stand-‐

alone web series, a hilarious and unique story about the struggles of following your dreams and perhaps the joys and perils of the casual work environment. The Casuals is proof that fact is funnier than fiction.
