CRIMSON HILL NOW HOME TO THE BEST TURF IN TOWN

Sydney’s soccer enthusiasts can now play like professionals - rain, hail or shine - thanks to a new FIFA two-star accredited synthetic field, installed as part of the new Crimson Hill community at Lindfield.

Opened in December last year, the Charles Bean Sportsfield has been awarded the prestigious accreditation - the highest available for synthetic turf fields.

Defence Housing Australia (DHA), developers of Crimson Hill, worked together with Ku-ring-gai Council and the Northern Suburbs Football Association to develop the field. DHA has also constructed a two-storey community centre, featuring three multi-purpose rooms, a kitchen and change room facilities, as well as storage for the field. Both facilities are operated by Ku-ring-gai Council.

DHA Managing Director Peter Howman said the existing fields presented a chance to provide the community with a significantly enhanced facility.

Though originally planning on installing a natural playing field, DHA, in consultation with Council, chose to install the high-quality artificial turf to maximise playing time and minimise maintenance.

“The fields have long been a well-patronised part of this area. We’re excited that as part of the new development, we’ve been able to improve something that has such a clear community benefit,” he said.

Duncan Tweed, Chief Executive Officer of the Northern Suburbs Football Association said there are more than 15,000 players from 34 clubs in the winter competition. The Charles Bean Sportsfield has just shot to the top of the list when it comes to playing on the best turf in town.

“We’ve been waiting for a field like this for a long time. It is fantastic – the best surface we have in our Association,” he said.

The new field’s all-weather properties have also enabled the Association to run its first ever Asian Football Confederation accredited coaching course, scheduled for September.

“One of the main reasons we’re able to host this course is because we can’t get rained off on this field,” he said.

“We get a lot of emails from councils saying ‘fields are unavailable due to wet weather’. It makes a big difference to get emails that say ‘fields are unavailable due to wet weather – except for Charles Bean Sportsfield’.”

What does a FIFA two-star accreditation actually mean?

The FIFA Stars are awarded to football turf pitches that have passed a series of stringent laboratory and field tests.

Every turf must first pass laboratory tests to determine its composition and must then be tested for durability, joint strength, climactic resistance, player-to-surface interaction and ball-to-surface interaction. For FIFA two-star fields, the reaction of the turf to the skin is also tested.

Every installed pitch must also be tested on-site. Fields are measured by how the ball reacts on the surface, then it must similarly be tested to see how it reacts to the actions of players.

Natural grass in ideal condition is the benchmark for these FIFA test criteria in order to ensure highest playing comfort and to constantly improve the quality of football turf pitches.
