Developers find their inner Zen and create an urban oasis at Sydney’s city edge

Sydney, May, 1 2014: It might sit among the hustle and bustle of one of Sydney’s most exciting new urban transformations, but the new 88-apartment development Asper, Rosebery has promised over 30 per cent of dedicated communal space, offering a rare escape from the rat race.

Marketed by Colliers International, Asper is the latest project for developers and builders Atlas Construction Group and is a clever response to the 4,006 sqm site bounded by one of area’s key links to the CBD.

Beautifully located, the project is set more than ten metres back from active Botany Road and with the first level of residential more than eight metres above the ground floor commercial area and first floor carpark, Asper apartments provide a rare respite from the daily grind.

Designed by award winning architects Turner, the development presents as a ‘yin yang’ concept. Exteriors of the two six-level buildings – one in black with a white core and white features and the other an inverse, in white with black core and black features - will be finished in glazed and unglazed brick, giving its street face a distinct industrial edge and ‘Yang’ appeal.

But inside, the hard exterior gives way to around 870sqm of landscaped courtyard communal space with built in seating, bookended by two 165sqm plantings of towering bamboo, linking the buildings and providing residents with a unique outlook and private internal sanctuary – the ‘Yin’.

Associate Director Kevin Driver says that Turner has been able to complement Asper’s incredible city location by positioning the buildings away from and above the busy environment.

“By setting the apartments back from the street, lifting them off ground level, and arranging them around the internal landscaped courtyards, the overall design of the building creates a truly serene setting and lifestyle for its residents.”

Asper’s 88 apartments span the top four levels across the two buildings and include a mix of 38 one-bedrooms starting at 50sqm, 41 two-bedrooms starting at 74sqm and 9 three-bedrooms starting at 103sqm. Prices range from $510,000 for a one-bedroom, $695,000 for a two bedroom and $900,000 for a three-bedroom.

The generously sized and light-filled apartments will all feature stunning floor-to-ceiling windows, split-system air conditioning, premium kitchen and bathroom finishes, timber and stone detailing and flooring, German appliances, and bike storage near each internal communal space.

“We wanted to design living spaces that balanced the natural environment as well as the project’s urban setting,” says Turner Interior Architect Angus Henderson.

“State-of-the-art appliances against natural finishes, with plenty of light and space, help achieve this contrasting balance and create the very-best of contemporary city living.”

Atlas Constructions Managing Director Robert Yazbek, whose other recent project is the successful Mascot Square, said Turner had created a great response for the strategically located site, designing private escapes within close reach of the excitement and action of the inner urban area.

“Rosebery and its surrounding suburbs are undergoing significant change from industrial heartland to a buzzing residential homeland,” he said.

Mr Yazbek said younger buyers were recognising Rosebery as a lively, well-connected place to live with cafes, restaurants and retail at their doorstep.

“With Asper, residents will have the luxury of city conveniences and links to the CBD, but at the end of the day they can come home to a beautifully designed and exceptionally built apartment with a calming, luscious green outlook. It’s a rare feature for any apartment development,” he said.

With public transport services at its doorstep, Asper is also conveniently located to Sydney International Airport, Sydney’s eastern beaches, Sydney universities and high schools, as well as the Sydney CBD.

“The beauty with Asper is that it is sensationally located and its design is a creative approach that makes the most of what the neighbourhood offers and adds something more,” said Colliers International’s Director of Residential Ian Bennett.

“Because of this, it’s guaranteed to attract an extremely wide range of buyers – from first-home-buyers who want to get their foot in the door but still remain within the city’s inner ring, to investors who understand the changes that are happening in the area, and even to down-sizers who want access to the city but want their own sanctuary. It ticks all the boxes,” he said.
