Massive changes in Australia monitor market...LCd outsells CRD displays and a new leader in Q4 2003

Announcement posted by IDC 03 Mar 2004

IDC has recently released its final Australian total monitor market results for October to December 2003. The overall market grew by a razor thin margin of just over 0.1% from the previous quarter, but it was a sizeable increase of 14.5% year-on-year. The main story of the quarter was the weakness of the Branded market as it gave up over 8 points from Q3 to Q4 2003 to the OEM market in unit shipment terms.
The anthem of the last quarter of the 2003 was that of LCD panel shortages. Despite problems with supply, LCD sales into the channel made up 53.0% of Branded unit shipments in Q4, up from 51.5% during the third quarter of 2003. In the total monitor market LCD had 50.6% of unit shipments during Q4 2003, signifying the movement of the Australian market towards the form factor.
Michael Sager, IDC Analyst states the Q4 2003 results were very significant, as they are an indicator of the future Australian monitor market. Despite challenges from LCD panel supply the overall monitor market CRTs were outsold by the new displays for the first time ever. He added the Branded market now has a new leader in Samsung but it will see increased competition from the former number one, LG, and number three Philips over the coming quarters. This market will continue to be very competitive in 2004 with smaller tenders to be had, decreasing ASVs, and growth from the OEM market.
Mr. Sager also stated, the Q4 2003 monitor market was fraught with shortages and changes in vendor rankings. Samsung finished in first position in unit shipment terms with 18.1% of the Branded monitor market. LG followed in second place with 17.3% share after leading the market for four consecutive quarters. Number three Philips continued its solid performance by increasing its share 0.6% from the third quarter to 12.6% in Q4 2003. Mitsubishi continued its slow decline in the market as it finished in fourth position with 10.9% share. Rounding out the top 6 were BenQ (8.5%) and Acer (4.9%).
In the Branded LCD market, Samsung once again led the market and it gained a point to finish with 20.9% share. LG finished in second position with 12.0%, followed by a surging BenQ with 11.6% share. On the CRT side, LG finished in first position with 23.2% share, followed by Philips with 17.2% in second place. To round out the top three, Samsung overtook Mitsubishi to finish with 14.9% share of the Branded CRT market.
