Two Centenarians Celebrate Birthdays at Feros Care

Announcement posted by Feros Care 05 Sep 2014

It’s not every day there is a centenarian in the house – let alone two – but two Feros Care Wommin Bay village residents will turn 100 this spring.

To start the centenary celebrations, Feros Care will host a party for Thelma Daniels who will celebrate her 100th birthday on 9 September.

Thelma’s birthday cake will be shared with soon-to-be centenarian, Florence “Eileen” Holland, who turns 100 on 10 October.

Former nurse, Thelma, grew up in Sydney and married Glengarry banana farmer Norman Daniel in 1947.

“The move north to a country farm marked a big change for mum, who was used to the city life,” says Thelma’s daughter, Dorothy.

“She devoted her life to her husband, who adored her, and Thelma did whatever she could for her three children. She was also very involved in charity work in the Tweed community.”

Dorothy said her mother is “a very kind and loving person”.

“She has always been very faith focused. Her faith kept her going – that’s why she loves the church services at Wommin Bay. It doesn’t matter to Mum what denomination – she just likes to hear the sermon,” says Dorothy.

Eileen Holland still likes her independence. She was given a wheelie walker just six months ago, tells a good joke and insists on catching a cab to the bank to do her own banking.

“She’s very strong willed in the best possible way,” says grandson, Ivan Holland.

Eileen lost her husband Stan more than 30 years ago and since then has led a very independent life.

“She’s always looked after herself and avoided injury through the years,” says Ivan.

“But her eyesight is failing and she had a bad fall six months ago which set her back a bit. That said, she’s still in good spirits and likes to laugh at a good joke.”
