Fitness is all in a day’s work at Feros Care

Announcement posted by Feros Care 24 Sep 2014

Getting fit is all in a day’s work for Feros Care employees completing the Fitness Forever 2014 Challenge which started this month.

Feros Care Director of Health and Wellbeing, Kate Swanton said the new Feros Care workplace wellness initiative, encouraging employees of all fitness levels to achieve optimal health, is excellent for staff morale and creating workplace harmony.

Ms Swanton said the 2014 Fitness Forever Challenge – which received funding as part of a Queensland Government Workplaces for Wellness Initiative – aims to create healthier, happier and more connected staff.

“Service excellence is dependent on a healthy, energised and motivated workforce. Workplace health promotion has proven results in transforming workforces,” she said.

The program, promising individual fitness and nutrition outcomes for staff, is structured around team support and encouragement and fostering a supportive, fun environment for healthy lifestyle change.

The Fitness Forever 2014 Challenge also has the potential to:
  • Improve absenteeism.
  • Reduce workers’ compensation.
  • Enhance staff satisfaction.
  • Enhance workplace culture.
  • Build community capacity within the organisation via new opportunities to participate and contribute to supporting staff connecting to the Feros Community.
  • Reduce individual staff health risk factors.
The Fitness Forever 2014 Challenge follows the success of Feros Care’s first 10-week Fitness Forever program, held last year, where 172 employees took part.

The 2013 challenge encouraged employees to improve their nutrition intake, fitness and body fat ratio and increase physical exercise while enhancing team development.

John Wood, from Forged Fitness in Tweed Heads has partnered with Feros Care for the last two years on this exciting program, and will put the Feros Care team through their paces in a fitness regime including exercises and motivational videos.

Staff will be weighed and body measurement and physical fitness levels taken before the course begins. Staff statistics will be compared when the course is completed at the end of November this year.

Ms Swanton said implementation of Fitness Forever was a significant investment in living the Feros values.
They include:
  • Everyone matters – there is no greater message to staff that they matter than organisational support for staff to achieve their optimal health.
  • Life long learning – exposure to practical ways to lose weight and body size, eat healthily and increase fitness empowers staff to enhance and improve their own health and wellbeing.
  • Positive energy – good health is vital for positive energy.
  • Innovative thinking – the team challenge will energise staff to think about ways to increase levels of physical activity and change the way they eat. The social media interaction will encourage everyone to share their innovative thinking – and is one of the key prize categories.  The most effective health promotion projects are those that build the capacity of the target group – in this project, Feros Care staff.
  • Absolute integrity – the project reaffirms the organisation’s commitment to its greatest asset – its staff.
Ms Swanton said the aged care provider had spent the last five years building the ideal aged care workplace for the 21st century.

“This has been achieved by focusing on our commitment to staff, work satisfaction and work-life balance while meeting the needs and expectations of residents at three aged care facilities and home care clients in four states.

“Feros Care has worked hard to create a sustainable workplace culture strategy that has enabled the recruitment, retention, recognition and reward of a values-driven workforce focused on service excellence that delivers quality outcomes,” she said.
