The AUD 535 million Adelaide
Oval Redevelopment (AOR) received the South Australian Engineering Excellence
Award and Malcolm Kinnaird Award for Engineering Excellence at the recent 2014 South Australian Engineering
Excellence Awards (SAEAA) held in Adelaide.
Sponsored by the
country’s preeminent engineering organisation, Engineers Australia, this year’s
divisional awards programme also recognised another blue-chip Aurecon project,
the South Australian Health and Medical Research Institute (SAHMRI), with a South
Australian Commendation Award in the Buildings and Structures category.
Sharing success with project and award submission
partners Arup, AECOM and Walbridge & Gilbert, the AOR project team
demonstrated its industry-leading innovation. Achieving excellence in the
stadium’s design and completion to program and budget, the pioneering project includes
features such as a converged network design including communications and active
ICT equipment, electrical and High Voltage (HV) power supply with dual feeders,
Outside Broadcast (OB) cabling.
The project was also recognised for outstanding ITS mechanical
engineering solutions including Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) modelling, fire
and hydraulic engineering, field of play, structural engineering, civil
engineering, architectural lighting, and wind engineering including the
construction of a detailed scale wind tunnel model using stereolithography
(rapid prototyping), and acoustic engineering.
The award-winning project was fully documented using Building
Information Modelling (BIM). The virtual construction of the project using the
BIM process for design and modelling was a key factor in the project’s success.
Concluding comments from the
judging panel commended the project team for its enduring enthusiasm and
passion for client vision, and its collaborative, team-centric ethos.
“The client envisioned a
‘world class stadium in the heart of the city’ and that’s what our project team
delivered,” remarked Aurecon Project Leader, Derek Broome.
“It’s fantastic to think that
our people and teams have led the design and delivery of Adelaide’s very own
international, world’s best practice sporting and entertainment icon. The
project is a testament to the incredible engineering feats that can be achieved
when shared vision and collaborative teamwork is prioritised above all else.”
The big-ticket
project has already exhibited its serious patronage appeal with the 53 500 seat
stadium hosting over 1.1 million visitors since opening its doors for the
international Ashes series in late 2013.
It is expected to generate over AUD 200 million of wider economic
activity for the city of Adelaide and South Australia annually.
