Olympic Computers Get a New Life @ Hay And Nyngan

Announcement posted by NSW Department of Information Technology and Management 12 Dec 2001

Ex-Olympians are being re-deployed to provide technology and training at Hay and Nyngan, the Minister for Information Technolgy, Kim Yeadon, said today.

Computer systems used at the Sydney Olympics are at the heart of an initiative which will provide the Community Technology Centre (CTC) network with new computer systems while also giving IT students at Bathurst TAFE hands-on, technical experience, Mr Yeadon said.

The TAFE students have worked throughout the semester to re-configure two pods of Olympic computers which tomorrow will be handed over to be installed at CTCs in Hay and Nyngan.

Other members of the CTC@NSW network will also benefit in the future. Throughout 2002, IT students from Bathurst TAFE will reconfigure more pods of ex-Olympic stock specifically for the needs of CTC@NSW network members in other regional towns.

Each new pod comprises 10 workstations loaded with software, a Windows 2000 server and hub.

The beauty of the project is that the CTCs will receive a system which is ready to go. The CTCs only need to plug the computers in, switch them on and theyll be ready to use.

The students too would have benefited from working on a real world project, the ideal training program for a budding computer technician.

These activities challenged the students to solve problems and be active learners an ideal situation for IT students and one which conforms with new approaches to IT training.

The CTCs, which are funded through the Governments CTC@NSW program, are bringing computers, technology and training to small towns in rural and regional NSW.

Importantly, services provided by local CTCs are delivered by local people for local conditions

The Network currently has a membership of 47 CTCs with another 48 to be established by June 2003.
