“MESSING ABOUT” IN THE WINERY PAYS OFF
Wine Show Season for 2014 is almost over and overall, the standout performer for Ballandean Estate has been the “Messing About” Malbec – a triumph for this alternate variety and for the winemaking team.
Malbec was planted on the Ballandean Estate vineyards in the early 70’s and was used for blending with Cabernet Sauvignon, because ‘that’s just what you did with it” back then.
In more recent times and with the success of the “Strangebird” Wine trail in the Granite Belt, the Malbec has become a highly sought after variety and one that is pleasing the palates of wine judges as well as visitors to cellar door.
The most recent trophy for the Malbec was Best Wine of Show at the recent New England Wine Show with chief judge Huon Hooke.
“We are thrilled to receive this award” says Leeanne Puglisi Gangemi client relations manager of Ballandean Estate “Malbec has certainly gained the interest of Australian wine drinkers and we are proud to be produce one of such a high standard for our customers to enjoy.”
Produced as part of the “Messing About” Range has allowed winemaker Dylan Rhymer to work with the Malbec variety to find out what works best in Ballandean. So much so, that the Malbec has been blended with varieties like Shiraz and Jacquez in the past and a 2013 Malbec/Jacquez is due to be released soon.
The award winning 2012 “Messing About” Malbec is available in cellar door and online and in selected outlets throughout Brisbane.
