Startup Sleeping Duck takes the hassle out of mattress buying

MELBOURNE, NOVEMBER 6, 2014: Melbourne startup Sleeping Duck, an online retailer of a high quality and low cost Australian-designed mattress, is set to crack $1M in sales after only ten months in operation.
Co-founders Winston Wijeyeratne and Selvam Sinnappan founded online mattress company Sleeping Duck earlier this year after meeting at ANZ’s graduate program following their completion of engineering degrees.
They discovered they both shared a frustration with the inefficiencies they could see in big businesses.
Co-founder Selvam Sinnappan said after several months of brainstorming, they identified a gap in the mattress industry.
“The mattress industry was in desperate need of innovation, particularly in the customer service department,” Mr Sinnappan said.
“Our own experiences in major brick and mortar stores were terrible and stories of people being pressured by pushy salesperson into spending thousands of dollars on mattresses, only to be disappointed when they took them home and slept on them for a few nights were all too common,” he said.
Sinnappan said Sleeping Duck’s success lies in their simple, yet effective business model.
“We decided to change the way people buy their mattresses.
“Instead of offering a large range of similar products, we only offer one affordable, customisable mattress that we designed using our backgrounds in engineering, and combine that with the best customer experience.
“Instead of testing a mattress for 15 minutes in a store whilst being pressure-sold by a salesperson, we let our customers sleep on a mattress for a full 60 nights – if they don’t like it in that time, they can return the mattress for a full refund.
“It’s essentially a no-pressure, no-risk service that people really appreciate,” he said.
The company has seen month-on-month growth and predicts their success will will continue.
“If our product is always improving and our customers are genuinely happy then there is no reason our business shouldn’t keep growing,” said co-founder Winston Wijeyeratne.
