Former Governors General Honour ANZAC Centenary on Gallipoli-2015 Cruise

The Right Reverend theHonourable Dr Peter Hollingworth and The Right Honourable Sir Anand Satyanand have served their respective nations through noteworthy careers, community commitment and appointments of the highest calling.  Both will join the Gallipoli-2015 cruise and commemorate 100 years of ANZAC in the waters where the spirit itself was forged.

These honoured guests join exemplary shipboard company and will make an important contribution to Anzac Day centennial commemorations on board AZAMARA Journey.

This voyage plays host to world-renowned soprano, Dame Malvina Major, and respected Gallipoli experts, including Brad Manera and Dr John Basarin.  Highlights include a minute-by-minute re-enactment of the ANZAC voyage from Lemnos to Gallipoli and a solemn dedication where Australia’s AE2 submarine lies in the Sea of Marmara depths.

Governors General Peter Hollingworth and Sir Anand Satyanand will be keynote speakers, representing Australia and New Zealand respectively at the Rotary Gallipoli 2015 Peace Conference to be held in Istanbul on 18 April 2015, prior to joining AZAMARA.  The theme of the Conference which is organised by Turkish Rotarians is: 

“Promoting peace building through showcasing the friendship which developed between Turkey, Australia and New Zealand following the tragic campaign of Gallipoli in 1915”.

Gallipoli-2015 is proud to be one of the major sponsors of the Peace Conference and welcomes the contribution of Dr Peter Hollingworth and Sir Anand Satyanand during the proceedings. For Rotary International, this Conference proposes to be an important step in the formulation of peace related initiatives in the Istanbul Declaration to be promulgated to coincide with the occasion. It is hoped that location of historic Istanbul where Asia and Europe come face to face will be inspirational for Rotary principles of Peace and Conflict Resolution to be influential around the world with the proposed Declaration. This would be in keeping with the tragic Gallipoli campaign becoming a platform for peace and friendship that developed between Turkey, Australia and New Zealand. 

The Right Reverend the Honourable Dr Peter Hollingworth

Dr Peter Hollingworth was sworn in as Australia’s 23rd Governor-General on 29 June 2001.

His career began as Priest-in-Charge of St Mary’s North Melbourne 1960; then Chaplain to the Brotherhood of St Laurence where he served for 25 years, eventually as Executive Director.

Having also served as a Canon of St Paul’s Cathedral Melbourne he was made Bishop in the Inner City in 1985 and was elected Anglican Archbishop of Brisbane in 1989, overseeing several major reforms in the Diocese over the next 11 years.

Dr Hollingworth was Australian of the Year in 1991, Chairman of the International Year of Shelter for the Homeless National NGO Committee and served on the Centenary of Federation Council eventually as its Chair.  In 1998 he was elected as one of Australia’s ‘National Living Treasures’.

Since resigning from office in 2003 Dr Hollingworth’s continuing interests include:  mentoring disadvantaged young people, working with the homeless, building local community development initiatives and serving on a number of welfare bodies and chairing their boards.

Dr Peter Hollingworth graduated from the University of Melbourne with a Bachelor of Arts (1958), a Licentiate of Theology (1960), a Diploma of Social Studies (1970), a Master of Arts in Social Work (1979) and a Doctorate of Letters Lambeth 2001.  He also has been conferred with honorary doctorates from six Australian universities and is an Honorary Fellow of Trinity College Melbourne and St John’s College Brisbane.

The Rotary Club of Melbourne (where he is an involved member) was recently awarded Dr Hollingworth a Paul Harris Fellowship.  He continues to be active as a retired Bishop in the Diocese of Melbourne with Permission to Officiate.

The Right Honourable Sir Anand Satyanand, former Governor General of New Zealand

Rt Hon Satyanand was sworn in as New Zealand's 19th Governor-General in August 2006.  

Sir Anand is New Zealand's first Governor-General of Indian and Pacific ancestry.  In addition to English he speaks Fijian, Hindi and Māori.  Prior to his appointment, he enjoyed a long legal career as lawyer, judge and ombudsman as well as contributing to community, professional and sporting organisations.

After graduating from the University of Auckland, he began work at the Crown Solicitor's Office before joining an Auckland law firm where he rose to partner.  During this time, he served on the Government Criminal Law Reform and District Court Rules Committees.

Later, during 12 years as a Judge in the District Court, Sir Anand helped develop judicial orientation and professional education programs and served on the National Parole Board.  He then became a Parliamentary Ombudsman. 

His governance board memberships include Asia New Zealand Foundation, New Zealand Institute of International Affairs and Transparency International.  Sir Anand was a member of Auckland District Law Society Council, Freeman's Bay Community Committee and Council of New Zealand Rugby League. 

In 1990 he received a New Zealand Commemoration Medal and became a Distinguished Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit in 2005.  In 2006 his almer mater conferred an Honorary Doctorate.  On his appointment as Governor-General he became a Principal Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit (since redesignated as a Knight Grand Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit) and a Companion of the Queen's Service Order in 2007. 

In 2011 The Rotary Club of Wellington awarded Sir Anand a sapphire pin for his Paul Harris Fellowship.  During that year, he was also recognised with a Pravasi Bharatiya Samman Award from the President of India.

Born and raised in Auckland, Sir Anand is married to Lady Susan and they have three adult children.
