New Network Termination Unit Allows Service Providers to Leverage Existing ATM Infrastructure for New High Speed Ethernet Services

Announcement posted by RAD Data Communications 30 Aug 2005

RAD Introduces ACE-201 for Provisioning Gigabit Ethernet Services over ATM Networks, Quickly and with Minimal Costs and Risks
RAD Data Communications has announced the release of the ACE-201, an attractively priced network termination unit (NTU) that allows service providers to deliver new high speed Gigabit Ethernet services over their existing ATM infrastructure.
As customer premises-located equipment (CPE), the ACE-201 also defines a demarcation point between the providers network and the customer premises. This provides the dual benefits of end-to-end traffic and network management control for the operator with no exposure to the ATM network for the user. Alternatively, the ACE-201 can serve as a traffic concentrator to enable enterprises to take advantage of public ATM networks for their Ethernet-based internetworking.
Many leading carriers are heavily invested in ATM technology, says Robert Bell, Product Line Manager at RAD Data Communications. ACE-201 lets them leverage their existing infrastructure to offer popular new high-capacity Ethernet services and generate new revenues without making any further capital investments. With this NTU, there is no need for changes in the edge or the core networks, so deployment time is short, and costs and risks are minimal, continues Bell.
IP DSLAM backhauling
One of the biggest challenges for providers here in Australia is the need to connect the IP DSLAMs over their existing ATM network, said Udi Furman, Managing Director, RAD Australia. The ACE-201 can be used to backhaul IP DSLAMs over ATM network at a cost-effective price.
Fast Connection and Complete Interoperability
The ACE-201 ATM uplink has a standard STM-1/OC-3c interface supporting service speeds of up to 155 Mbps and is available with single mode 1310 nm, short or long haul fiber interface. This allows for fast deployment by connection to an existing ATM switch STM-1/OC-3c port. The single Gigabit Ethernet user port comes with a choice of copper or fiber interface. The Ethernet frame size can be up to 1594 bytes to allow special formats, including ISL and stacked VLANs.
The ACE 201 is compatible with other RAD ACE family products and can interoperate with any third-party ATM device or network. It also supports OAM functionality per ITU-T I.610 to help reduce operational costs by providing end-to-end traffic manageability and fault localization.
Map any IP VLAN to any ATM VC
The ACE-201 supports four different ATM service classes: CBR, VBR, GFR, and UBR. The service providers can assign each virtual connection (VC) to one of these service classes, define the QoS parameters and shape the traffic accordingly. By limiting the port ATM egress rate, service providers can control the total bandwidth provided to each user. These features enables providers to ensure Ethernet traffic separation and prioritization and offer varying service level agreement (SLA) contracts, thus generating more revenues from their existing infrastructure.
Fast Installation and Easy Management Reduce Opex
With a plug-and-play installation that doesnt require any pre-configuration or on-site setup, the 1U high, compact ACE-201 is easy to deploy, saving on both technician time and expenses. When plugged into the network, ACE-201 automatically learns both its own (host) and the NMS (manager) IP addresses, allowing the device to be configured from a remote site. Central management, including monitoring, configuration, fault isolation and collecting network statistics, can be proficiently performed with the RADview SNMP applications running over UNIX or PC platforms with a graphical, user-friendly display. A CORBA interface provides easy integration with third-party management.
