Fixalip – the Angelina Jolie of cold sore treatments: using its power to empower a new generation

Announcement posted by Fixalip 20 Jan 2015

For immediate release - Melbourne, Australia – 5 January, 2015- Fixalip, a family run and owned company and maker of the popular cold sore treatment, is shaking things up in their re-launch to focus on the prevention and stopping the spread of HSV-1, the virus responsible for cold sores in future generations, while also curbing the embarrassing symptoms associated with the virus.

Initially launched over 40 years ago, Fixalip is a long-standing remedy for cold sore sufferers in Australia. John Catsicas, a pharmacist and resident of Melbourne, invented the formula in 1974 and soon began offering it to customers.

“I developed Fixalip in response to the huge number of people coming into my pharmacy seeking information and treatment for cold sores. I saw an opportunity to offer a treatment based not only on the behaviour of the virus, but inhibiting its growth and development, and therefore the severity of symptoms."

John, who is also a practising naturopath, wanted a treatment that wasn’t rooted in traditional medicine. The result is a blend of alcohols and ether that damages the viral membrane and harms HSV-1's ability to replicate. It soon became popular with the locals—not only because it relieved symptoms, but for its preventative effects.

“Fixalip ensures that the immediate environment around the cold sore is inhospitable to the virus,” John says, “therefore inhibiting the development and spread of symptoms."

While John is at the centre of Fixalip's development and history, his 29 year old daughter, Stephanie Catsicas, is using her own expertise in pharmacy to broaden the company's vision.

“Dad did an amazing job inventing the Fixalip product over 40 years ago. I see an opportunity to re-launch and grow the brand, so that Fixalip and its benefits can be shared with a much larger group of cold sore sufferers. We know how debilitating cold sores can be, and just how good the product is, so we’re keen to bring Fixalip to those people… and into the 21st century."

Visitors to Fixalip's web site will find information on the nature of the virus and how it spreads. The site’s main focus is empowering people to stop the spread of HSV-1 and minimise the impact of symptoms on daily life.
