Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment marks the Blu-ray
and DVD release of this year’s most talked about film,
GONE GIRL, with an Australian Couples Survey

In light of the movie’s release on DVD and Blu-ray on February 4, a national poll made up of over 1,025 participants shines a glaring light on the state of Australian relationships – highlighting vastly different relationship priorities between men and women and a casual attitude on the part of both genders to issues around sex, lies and fidelity.

  • While audiences of the film may have been thrilled by themes of cheating and lies, the survey results show they are now commonplace, with three in five admitting they have been dishonest about their sexual history

  • Many couples may have related with GONE GIRL’S evolving storyline of hidden truths, with three-quarters of couples habitually keeping secrets and nearly two thirds saying that their partner doesn’t know their deepest secret

  • Six out of 10 Australians don’t know their partner’s blood type, so Nick’s (played by Ben Affleck) lack of knowledge around Amy’s whereabouts, her blood-type and even state of happiness within their relationship is not an uncommon theme it seems

  • And Rosamund Pike’s Amy’s own yearning for children is also far from a surprise with four in five Aussies wanting more out of their relationships

The survey is a nod to the potent theme of marital disintegration that features in GONE GIRL, the critically acclaimed film, directed by David Fincher (released on Blu-ray & DVD, February 4).  The film was a box office smash in 2014, earning an Academy Award nomination for its female lead, Rosamund Pike.

Sex and Lies

One in four Aussies admitted to being unfaithful* and amongst those who have been unfaithful, nearly two in five (38%) ‘have had sex with someone else’ whilst in a relationship.

The central GONE GIRL characters are both intelligent individuals, but proving brains are no indicator of values, graduates are more likely to cheat than non-graduates (29% vs 21%).

Based on the global bestselling film by Gillian Flynn, GONE GIRL unearths the secrets at heart of a modern marriage as a web of lies unfolds following the disappearance of Amy Dunne. Incredibly, in reality, three quarters of people habitually keep secrets from their partner - three in five have hidden their sexual history, whilst the same number again say that their partner isn’t aware of their deepest secret.

Do You Even Know Me?

The initial portrait of Nick and Amy Dunne’s blissful union crumbles, with it becoming clear the couple hide many daily truths from each other. When posing the question to these Australian couples, surprisingly over a third (34%) admit that their partners are unsure, or do not know what they do for a living.

Even more worryingly, nearly one in five would follow their partner without them knowing.

*Includes sex, kissing or an ‘emotionally intimate relationship’ with someone else.
