Launceston Business Women Raise Awareness of Ovarian Cancer with Morning Teal Event

Announcement posted by Strawberry Communications 06 Feb 2015

Launceston-based women’s business networking group Empowered Mums is honouring two women with ovarian cancer and raising funds and awareness about the disease with a special event next week during Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month.

Two members of Launceston Empowered Mums Business Network have been touched by ovarian cancer through their mothers. It is more common than many realise, with 1,4001 women diagnosed with ovarian cancer and more than 1000 of those dying from the disease each year.

Empowered Mums’ Morning Teal event will be held on Wednesday, February 11, between 10am and 12pm at the Tailrace Centre, Riverside.

Empowered Mums Launceston Network Leader Ari Powell will answer questions about the business networking group and member Nadine Veldhuis will be speaking about Ovarian Cancer Australia (OCA), symptoms of the disease and what women should be looking out for.

“Ovarian cancer has a lower profile than other more prominent cancers, such as breast and skin cancers, and is often overlooked as a result,” Ari said.

“Many people don’t understand the symptoms of ovarian cancer well, despite the disease significantly affecting so many Australian women each year, so we want to support Ovarian Cancer Australia’s efforts,” she said.

Information about ovarian cancer and the OCA will be available during the event and Empowered Mums will sell teal ribbons. The group aims to raise $500 for the charity through proceeds from the morning tea, raffles, a silent auction, teal ribbon sales and donations.

Members will have their products and services showcased during the fundraising event, giving attendees the chance to do business together and non-members an opportunity to network and see whether the community is right for them.

The Launceston Empowered Mums group raised more than $1400 for OCA last year through its Styled for Success event and will hold a similar event later in the year.

Tickets for the Morning Teal are $20 for Empowered Mums members and $25 for non-members. Purchase tickets at Eventbrite: http://www.eventbrite.com.au/e/morning-teal-ovarian-cancer-fundraiser-tickets-15369616938.
