Animated Film a Family Treat at Casula Powerhouse

Announcement posted by Sydney Film Festival at Casula 23 Mar 2015

Sydney Film Festival brings Moomins on the Riviera to South West Sydney
On Sunday 12 April, Sydney Film Festival returns to Casula Powerhouse for the third of the Festival’s monthly screenings there.  This time they’re bringing along the Moomins, a rather eccentric and charmingly funny family of hippopotamuses, who have been a Finnish national treasure since they were first sketched in Tove Jansson’s comic strips in 1954.
Now for the first time they come to life in the comic’s first big-screen adaptation, a toon feature for all audiences, to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the artist’s birth.
Recently premiering at the BFI London Film Festival, the film has been delighting both kids and adults around the world.  Moominmamma and Moominpappa, Snorkmaiden, Snufkin, and Little My are much more than caricatures. The Moomins embrace cross-cultural understanding and tolerance, addressing universal themes such as family, optimism and finding joy in the small things in life – in colour and beautiful imagery true to the original drawings.
“This is a delightful film that echoes the values of our community: to be neighbourly to one another.  Families and people of all ages will get something special from this lovely movie,” said Liverpool’s Mayor Ned Mannoun.
Sydney Film Festival Director Nashen Moodley said, “A film lover can be any age, and this is one of those rare movies that all can enjoy. Sydney Film Festival’s partnership with Casula Powerhouse is about reaching out to new audiences of any age who are hungry for great experiences.”

Moomins on the Riviera is a Finnish-French coproduction with French director Xavier Picard and Finnish co-director and producer Finn Hanna Hemilä. The production uses traditional hand-drawn animation, giving a clean but intentionally retro look to the movie.

Kiersten Fishburn, Director of Casula Powerhouse, said, “This is a really enchanting film for all ages. We’ve scheduled the screening at 2pm so kids and their parents can all come down and enjoy.”

Moomins on the Riviera is the third film to be screened at Casula under a new partnership between Sydney Film Festival, Casula Powerhouse Arts Centre and Liverpool Council. The Festival is undertaking monthly screenings throughout 2015, delivering an incredible film experience in the uniquely re-purposed power station.
