Narangba Timbers provides vital information for consumers on their company blog about how to keep termites away.
Brisbane, QLD, 07 April 2015 - Narangba Timbers isn’t in the pest control business, but that doesn’t stop them from educating their customers about how to protect their homes and their projects from termites. Narangba Timbers is one of the largest timber suppliers in Brisbane, which carries one of the highest ratings for termite risk in Australia.

Jack Kyle, owner of Narangba Timbers, takes great pride in providing high-quality timber to his customers and wants to see them get the most out of their investments in their homes. According to Mr Kyle:

“We provide a lot of timber to the Brisbane area for anything from small projects to full home construction. We don’t want to see termites destroy anyone’s home or their projects. We aren’t a pest control company, but we will do whatever we can to make sure our customers get the most out of the timber they purchase from us. We know they work hard to complete their building projects, large and small, and we want to see them get years of enjoyment.”

Mr Kyle recently posted an article on his company blog explaining how the Building Code of Australia (BCA) contains provisions for protecting a home from termites. He pointed out that the same rules that apply to a new home can also be applied to an existing home.

How Termites Infest a Home

Termites build nests underground. They then find their way into homes through any flaw that will allow them in. They build galleries over walls and congregate any place they can find cellulose to eat, but especially in timber.

Barriers are the Best Protection

According to the BCA, the best way to protect any home from termite infestation is to use a dual approach. All timber should either be treated or offered natural protection against termites. Then, the home should be sealed so that all flaws or cracks have chemical or physical barriers that prevent termites from entering a home.

Termites are also attracted by collections of moisture in a home, so the BCA recommends that all pipes and subfloor areas be checked to ensure that there is no moist place where termites can gain a foothold.

Suspended timber floors that contain ant caps and/or termite shields are another front on which the battle against termite infestation can be waged. The floors can also have barriers added to them and the ant caps and termite shields are very helpful for inspections.

Risk Mitigation

Mr Kyle also recommends that all homes have at least one termite inspection per year and some homeowners should consider two per year. Another way to lessen the likelihood of a termite infestation is to not allow any organic material including timber to sit by the side of the building.

According to Mr Kyle, “We want you to have a home you can be proud of for years to come.”
