Roebourne Crew wows Justice Crew

Roebourne’s “crew” have come in droves to PCYC to take part in creating a song that was showcased to special guests, Justice Crew, at the Youth Week celebration on Wednesday the 15 April at the community oval.
The topic of the song is “drugs and violence, what does it mean to us?” and also aims to incorporate the overall theme of WA Youth Week, “it starts with us”. The idea behind the project is to give local young people an opportunity to have a voice and learn from some very talented mentors.
“Roebourne gets too much negative press so I wanted something good out there, something for the kids and community to be proud of,” said Kirsty Levi, PCYC Manager and brain child behind the project.
“The local community is so proud of the effort our young people have put into this project,” she said.
The project has been a real community effort, with Mawarnkarra Aboriginal Medical Service, IF Foundation, Yaandina Youth Service, Mingullatharndo Community, and the Department of Corrective Services all involved, with the City of Karratha sponsoring the event and arranging special guests Justice Crew.
Roebourne is fortunate to have some extremely talented locals, namely Nic and Hemi from Mawarnkarra Aboriginal Medical Service Tobacco Action and Healthy Lifestyle Team, and Ariana and David from the IF Foundation, who have driven the technical aspects of the project.
After weeks of work, the final product is a video performance, which was shown to Justice Crew at the Youth Week event.
“This is a great example of what can be done when there is collaboration between agencies and a strong desire to deliver activities that really engage and interest local young people,” said WA PCYC CEO Jock Gillespie.
WA PCYC is an independent, not-for-profit organisation operating closely with the WA Police for the past 74 years. PCYC offers two broad youth services to the community: recreational activities and intervention programs and aims to provide a brighter future for young people through direction, development and opportunity.
