BRISBANE - The Devondale World’s Richest Barista competition, held this weekend as part of the CafeBiz trade exhibition for the very first time and offering a prize pool of AUD$50,000, was a fierce competition between 14 barista teams from around the world.

Veneziano Coffee Roasters (VIC) finished runner up by a mere point in the final challenge yesterday won by the Natvia Sweet Team, with Espresso Room (ACT) finishing in third place. The top three teams received cheques from Devondale for $35,000, $10,000 and $5,000 respectively.

The concept behind the challenge is to reproduce the high-pressure environment baristas experience in espresso bars. They must co-operate as a team to deliver the three essential elements that coffee customers expect; fast service, excellent presentation and high quality beverages. The fast-paced format allows the judges to score immediately.

The 14 teams competing in the World Richest Barista Competition were:

  • Mocopan Coffee
  • St Ali Family
  • Veneziano Coffee Roasters
  • Dramanti Artisan Roasters
  • Team SG (Singapore)
  • Team Gee Cafe (Beijing)
  • Grinders Coffee
  • Di Bella Coffee
  • Coffeetorians
  • Natvia Sweet Team
  • Silver Chef Hot Shots
  • Magnum Poolside
  • Espresso Room
  • Uncle Joe’s Coffee House

CafeBiz engaged the high-growth coffee and cafe community of Brisbane, Gold Coast, Ipswich and Sunshine Coast over the weekend with coffee companies and suppliers from around Australia and overseas in a number of industry events, including latte art competitions.

The Compak Golden Bean Roasters Cup was also held in conjunction with the CafeBiz trade expo, with Marichi Clarke from Red Star Coffee Roasters (VIC), formerly of Proud Mary Coffee Roasters and Veneziano Coffee Roasters, winning the trophy.

*Bond St Winter seasonal blend will be available at www.venezianocoffee.com.au/shop from June 1.
