Technology wins over the traditional gala night for the Australian Women in Wine Awards

The way of the future for awards nights is being embraced by Australia's newest wine awards
Australia's newest wine awards program, the Australian Women in Wine Awards which launched on July 30, is ditching the glittering gala night in favour of live-streaming technology in an attempt to include more women in this history making event.

The awards, the first of their kind in Australia, acknowledge and reward the work of women in the Australian wine industry, as well as industry leaders who champion equality and fairness for all sexes in the workplace.

However, the regional nature of the wine industry means that attending gala nights can be particularly expensive and time consuming for nominees, organisers, guests and sponsors.

Instead, each wine region is being supported to host their own gathering to celebrate the live-streamed announcement of the winners on 17 November and can register their event online via the awards website womeninwineawards.com.au.

“Technology is now able to provide a viable alternative to a centralised awards event and the decision to use it was adopted very early on in the organising process,” said Chair of the Australian Women in Wine Awards and founder of The Fabulous Ladies’ Wine Society, Jane Thomson. “It was the optimal solution for us to maximize the number of women – and men – who could join the celebration and be part of this groundbreaking awards program. By removing the burden of having to travel to a gala night we also hope it will encourage more women to enter. ”

The entry deadline for the Australian Women in Wine Awards is Tuesday October 6, 2015. Enter at womeninwineawards.com.au. The winners will be announced on Tuesday November 17.
