Self-Funded Australian Romantic Drama Scored By Legendary Composer Ilaiyaraaja

Announcement posted by Lens Films 18 Sep 2015

Cross-Cultural Romance for the mainstream audience

Julian Karikalan, a Media producer with Corrective Services NSW, and an independent filmmaker is finishing up his feature film, "Love and Love Only", a romantic drama about an Indian boy and an Australian girl. This independent film is being 100% funded by Karikalan himself, with no outside assistance from funding bodies.

When coming up with the idea for the film, Karikalan always kept his micro budget in mind. He chose actors, locations, and props based on his micro budget. However, this decision was more or less a creative one as opposed to a desperate one. In a recent interview, Karikalan notes that "...in today's technological advancement, we don't need all those big budgets and big crews to get a visual on screen with proper sound."

Despite his budgetary constraints, Julian managed to rope in legendary Indian composer Ilaiyaraaja to compose the music for the movie. A veteran composer who has scored a world record 1000+ movies in his career, Ilaiyaraaja is a household name in India. Karikalan was truly honoured when he heard from Ilaiyaraaja that he liked the film and agreed to support it. Julian was doubly excited about the fact that “Love and Love only” is the first ever English language feature film for which Ilaiyaraaja has composed original songs for.

Being an Australian film, he wanted a native Australian voice for the film. Julian chose Rachael Leahcar from South Australia as the voice for the songs, and Ilaiyaraaja approved it happily. Rachael Leahcar was a finalist in the Voice. She is so excited about the opportunity to sing for Ilaiyaraaja, and is doubly thrilled that her first song for a feature film is his first song for an English feature film as well. He has composed more than 4000 songs for Indian films.

The plot of the film involves a love affair between an Indian International student and a working class Australian girl. The film takes place in Australia, and focuses on the cross-cultural aspect of the relationship. Julian notes that while he does not intend to promote a strong message to the viewers through the film, there is a lot that they can take away in regard to how two people in love can make their relationship work, whether cross-cultural or not. The film also deals with the realities of student life in a westernized country.

"Love And Only Love" premiered in Silicon Valley in the USA, at the San Francisco Global Movie Festival in August of 2015. Theatrical release is set for November this year, for Australia and New Zealand.
