Equant renews major shipping contract in China

Announcement posted by Equant 29 Oct 2002

Equant frame relay network extends global footprint for China Shipping Container Lines
Equant (NYSE: ENT) (Euronext Paris: EQU), an industry leader in global data and IP services for multinational businesses, has renewed a three-year contract with China Shipping Container Lines Company Limited (CSCL).

CSCL, one of Chinas largest container carriers, ranks among the worlds top 20 container carriers and operates dozens of domestic and international routes between China and Japan, key cities in Southeast Asia, Australia, the Mediterranean, the U.S., Europe and other global destinations.

Equant will link CSCL sites across the globe via Equant LAN Access. Equant will connect most of CSCLs important international locations on most continents and will carry such critical applications as the Trading Ship System for tracking vessels and cargo as well as e-mail between its various subsidiaries. Equant LAN Access combines frame relay with managed routers to provide a turnkey service for building private LAN to WAN data networks with full management at all its sites. Equants global network management centres will monitor the routers around the clock.

The company selected Equant because of Equants reliable frame relay infrastructure, global coverage, its ability to provide local support in 191 countries and around the clock network monitoring.

Equant has been working with China Shipping since 1999, when it provided professional consulting and network design services.

At China Shipping we recognize that the timely availability of cargo documents, online information about cargo vessel positions and the ability to provide accurate status updates to customers are crucial business success factors. We chose Equant to build our network because their strengths matched our needs exactly. As one of the truly global networking companies, they offered us wide reach, on-the-ground support and best-in-class products and services that could help us meet our goals, said Yi Fei, deputy general manager of China Shipping Telecommunication Co., Ltd.

This contract underlines Equants strength as a global player, and also reinforces our commitment to establishing a strong presence in China, said Francis Yip, general manager, Equant China. We are pleased to be able to leverage our frame relay service to help China Shipping optimize their strategies. We look forward to a continued partnership as China Shipping extends its multinational operations.
