Surprising new Malcolm Turnbull video launched on Australian aid

Ahead of the mid-year economic forecast announcements, the Campaign for Australian Aid coalition has launched a bold new video athttp://dearprimeminister.org,featuring a montage of speeches by Malcolm Turnbull. Finally, through some skillful editing Mr Turnbull has delivered the kind of speech we’ve been waiting to hear for years - an increase in our investment in Australian aid.

“Australian aid is one of Australia’s greatest achievements but in the last two years, the Government has made the largest ever cuts to our aid program abandoning Australia’s promise to the world's most promising people and damaging our international reputation,” said Executive Officer for the Campaign for Australian Aid, Tony Milne.

If the Government goes ahead with its fourth consecutive cut to aid, Australian aid will hit its lowest level ever in our nation’s history in 2016, falling to 0.22 per cent of our Gross National Income (GNI).

“We’re calling on Mr Turnbull to take the first step to repairing Australian aid by stopping the fourth consecutive cut and beginning the journey to fulfill our global promise of investing 0.7 per cent of our GNI to aid.”

Mr Milne added that when we invest in the future of our neighbours by helping to create opportunities for children to learn, environments for women to thrive in and people to find work in, we’re helping to build a brighter future for all and a more peaceful world.

“By repairing Australian aid, we’re working alongside our neighbours to build a more prosperous future for Australians, our region and a world free from poverty,” said Mr Milne.

The aid and development sector is asking the media and its supporters to share the video. Additionally, the 67,000 Australians who have joined our Campaign since February and the millions of Australians who support an Australian aid and development charity are being asked to send a letter to Mr Turnbull, asking them to drive change and embark on the journey to repair Australian aid.
