Emergency dental services provider in Perth reveals how to avoid dental emergencies over the holidays.
Perth, WA, 11 December 2015 - The holidays are a time to reflect, celebrate and enjoy the company of friends and family. However, the holidays can also be tough on one’s teeth. This is why so many dental emergencies happen over the holidays. Recently, Dr Lisa Khokhlova, a provider of emergency dental services in Perth, provided a guide for consumers designed to keep them out of the dentist’s office on the holidays.

Dr Khokhlova cited eight things people can do to keep a dental emergency from happening over the holidays. The highlights are below.

Moderate Consumption of Snacks

Most holiday snacks contain a lot of sugar. Some, such as candy canes and Christmas cakes, contain sugar that spends an excessive amount of time on the teeth. Candy canes take a long time to eat, while Christmas cakes have dried fruit that can stick to the teeth. The holidays are full of these, as well as cookies, cakes and lollies, all containing high amounts of sugar.

Sugar is bad for the teeth because it helps feed harmful bacteria and create acids that erode and decay the teeth. Dr Khokhlova recommends keeping sugary treats at a minimum.

Moderate Consumption of Alcohol

Alcohol can harm teeth due to dehydration. Most alcoholic drinks have some forms of sugar in them, such as wine or champagne. In addition, drinks are mixed with sugary juices and soft drinks. This can leave a lot of sugar on the teeth. When alcohol dehydrates the body, it doesn’t produce as much saliva, which is the main defense teeth have against sugar and acids.

Stay Hydrated

Since the holidays occur when summer is coming into full swing, it is easy to become dehydrated due to enjoying the outdoors. The obvious solution is to drink plenty of water.

Don’t Brush Teeth Until One Hour After Eating Sugar

Sugar can weaken tooth enamel, compromising the finish and leaving it exposed to damage by brushing. Dr Khokhlova recommends using mouthwash or rinsing the mouth immediately, but not brushing until one hour after eating sugar.

Don’t Chew Ice

Ice can damage the teeth by causing small fractures and major breaks. The combination of high compressive force and low temperature is bad for the teeth.

Don’t Open Bottles With Teeth

While opening a bottle with one’s teeth is a great parlour trick, it usually ends up damaging the teeth.

Stay the Course

Often, people neglect their standard oral hygiene routine during the holidays. This can cause harm to the teeth and make problems worse in a short period of time.

Preventative Dentistry Before the Holidays

Due to the aforementioned holiday pitfalls, problems that already exist can worsen quickly during the holidays. Dr Khokhlova recommends that any existing problems are taken care of before the holidays.
