Openwave and Nokia Collaborate on Comprehensive MMS Interoperability Testing Program

Announcement posted by Openwave 18 Apr 2002

Product Interoperability Between Openwave and Nokia Will Ensure Better Consumer Experience and Faster Market Introduction
Openwave Systems Inc. (Nasdaq: OPWV), the worldwide leader of open IP-based communication infrastructure software and applications, and Nokia (NYSE: NOK), the world leader in mobile communications, today announced a comprehensive testing program to confirm interoperability between Openwave's MMS Client, MMS Server, and its WAP Gateway and Nokia's multimedia messaging (MMS) enabled handsets such as the Nokia 7650 imaging phone, and the Nokia MMS server solution.

Interoperability testing is designed to result in a seamless user experience independent of the network or the handset used, and enable operators to quickly provide compatible MMS services for their customers. The testing resulting in interoperability between the MMS offerings of both companies is anticipated before first full customer shipments.

"Openwave is committed to building products based on open standards and committed to cross vendor interoperability as a critical component for quick adoption," said Kevin Kennedy, Chief Operating Officer, Openwave. "Verified interoperability is the best way to truly provide communications service providers (CSPs) with a means to choose and deploy the best-of-breed client and server technologies. The global popularity of Nokia handsets makes this comprehensive testing program an important part of Openwave's work in this area."

"Nokia is firmly committed to completing interoperability testing with other key vendors in order to offer the best possible user experience for multimedia messaging," said Pertti Korhonen, Senior Vice President, Nokia Mobile Software. "Standards and interoperability are the key to creating the foundation of quality necessary for rapid adoption and increased use of advanced mobile messaging applications."

In addition to text messages, MMS can transmit messages containing graphics, photos, audio and even video clips between mobile devices, powered by the high-speed transmission technologies GPRS (General Packet Radio System) and UMTS (Universal Mobile Telecommunication System). MMS is an open standard approved by the Third Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) and WAP Forum, of which Openwave and Nokia are founding members.
